SUMMARY CLASS TITLE: DIRECTOR OF TRANSPORTATION
BASIC FUNCTION:
Plan organize coordinate and direct operations and activities involved in student transportation; communicate with District employees parents community representatives local officials and the general public.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
- Plan organize coordinate and direct operations and activities involved in student transportation to assure safe and effective transportation services.
- Plan and direct pre-service and in-service training of bus drivers in cooperation with staff development and safety/security units; provide leadership for development of vehicle safety program.
- Plan and approve transportation route and bus stop locations in cooperation with school principals and other school personnel involved and ensure continuity in operations by cross-training department employees.
- Determine departmental staffing needs and request approval from finance and personnel departments to ensure the department is fully staffed.
- Determine departmental equipment needs in the short-term and long-term and plan for the purchase of vehicles and other capital expenses as needed; oversee bidding and purchasing process for all transportation equipment supplies and services.
- Interview driver applicants; recommend drivers for employment and dismissal.
- Establish and/or maintain efficient operations in terms of staffing levels employee schedules and employee skills and knowledge.
- Collaborate with Director of Pupil Personnel to determine appropriate start and end times for each school in the District to provide efficient and predictable school bus routes.
- Train assign direct review and evaluate work of assigned employees.
- Oversee the inspection and diagnoses of mechanical defects in vehicles machines and equipment within the department.
- Communicate with parents district employees community representatives local officials and the general public; coordinate communications and information and promote positive relationships.
- Receive and resolve issues concerns and complaints concerning student transportation services; direct to appropriate personnel and monitor resolution.
- Assist with budget preparation as required; monitor and control budget according to established guidelines.
- Review all purchase requests and employee time reports for accuracy and submit to the finance department by required deadlines.
- Prepare required reports and assure the preparation and maintenance of department records; prepare and deliver oral reports as required.
- Design and implement or maintain an existing student behavior system that is consistent across the District; train department staff school staff as needed and students on behavior expectations as it relates to student transportation.
- Collect student behavior data to identify areas of growth and progress monitor the behavior expectations.
- Coordinate activities with other District departments; participate in management meetings to discuss District-wide issues.
- Meet periodically with staff to resolve issues communicate new developments and to assure operating objectives are understood and accomplished.
- Determine and communicate departmental objectives standards and policies; measure performance against objectives to update plans.
- Assure internal controls are established maintained and documented in compliance with organization directives.
- Participate in internal and external organization boards and committees as requested and authorized by appropriate management directives and specific authorities.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Masters degree required. Any combination equivalent to four years experience in transportation activities including at least one year in a lead or supervisory capacity required.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Valid Kentucky Commercial Class B drivers license including passenger endorsement; School Bus Certificate; must pass driving record check.
