Office of Stewardship and Development

Position Description


Job Title: Development Associate

Job Status: Full-Time

FLSA: Exempt


Reporting Functions: The Development Associate reports to the Executive Director for Stewardship & Development; no reports.


Job Function: The Development Associate supports the planning and implementation of annual appeal programs and campaigns including planned giving marketing the Chosen Blessed Shared program and the Because We Are Catholic Appeal which is the largest annual fundraising effort serving the Diocese of Allentown. The position also supports ongoing donor stewardship and outreach activities including mailings special recognition activities and event planning. In addition the Donor Associate manages cultivation solicitation and stewardship for a donor portfolio focused on annual gifts.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Donor solicitation: Manage portfolio of donors for cultivation stewardship and solicitation of annual gifts by phone mail email and personal visits.

  • Appeals and Campaigns Provide support for appeals and campaigns including the Because We Are Catholic Appeal Planned Giving marketing the Chosen Blessed Shared program and Cooks with Collars.
    • Assist with the creation and implementation of fundraising campaigns.
    • Provide planning and logistics support for direct mail email and social media outreach messaging and solicitations.
    • Draft general correspondence acknowledgment letters and other communications.
    • Coordinate and assist with the planning and implementation of fundraising events.

  • Donor Stewardship and Outreach Oversee ongoing donor stewardship and outreach activities including mailings special recognition activities and event planning.
    • Execute and oversee donor stewardship and cultivation communications in an organized and timely manner .
    • Provide technical and logistical support for donor events including but not limited to managing timelines activities deadlines tracking and coordination of guest lists facilities requirements catering invitation mailings and follow-up correspondence.
    • Help to identify prospective major donors through research and analytics.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

Bachelors degree or equivalent education and experience.


Other Requirements:

  • Ability to function at a high level as part of a team focused on the mission goals and values of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Allentown.

  • Familiarity with principals of fundraising including annual appeals major gifts planned giving personal solicitations and donor databases.

  • Exceptional organizational and project management experience and abilities.

  • Excellent writing and communication skills including familiarity and comfort working with social media outlets.

  • Solid relationship-building skills and ability to work with diverse array of people and personalities under pressures and deadlines.

  • Must find satisfaction in supporting donors to expand a relationship with their Catholic faith through their giving to ministries within the Diocese of Allentown.

  • Team player with a sense of humor.

  • Valid drivers license.


Physical Demands: The employee is regularly required to stand walk sit talk and hear both in person and by telephone; frequent use of equipment that includes repetitive motions and computer eye fatigue. Occasionally required to reach and lift with hands and arms; stoop kneel crouch or crawl lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work and observing general surroundings and activities.


Working Conditions: Normal office environment. Normal work hours are Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Will be required to meet with constituencies outside and in excess of normal work hours. Participation in evening and weekend activities in addition to significant driving throughout the diocese which includes the Pennsylvania counties of Berks Carbon Lehigh Northampton and Schuylkill are an essential part of the position.
