Under general direction this position provides comprehensive guidance to faculty and staff on employee benefit and insurance programs and is responsible for administering leaves of absence. The role ensures benefits and leaves are managed in accordance with applicable laws and University policies and in coordination with external partners such as Central Management Services and the State Universities Retirement System.
This role requires a strong understanding of University policies and relevant legislation including the FMLA ADA and PWFA. Equally important it calls for a high level of compassion professionalism and customer service as the Benefits Counselor supports employees through important and often sensitive life events.
The Benefits Counselor collaborates closely with others within Human Resources and University departments such as Payroll and Equal Opportunity and Access to ensure the accurate and effective delivery of services.

A. college coursework in human resource management business administration social sciences or a closely related field:
-30 semester hours equals one (1) year (12 months)
-Associates Degree (60 semester hours) equals eighteen months (18 months)
-90 semester hours equals two (2) years (24 months)
-Bachelors Degree (120 semester hours) equals three (3) years (36 months)
B. work experience performing clerical or paraprofessional duties related to benefits and/or insurance benefits insurance retirement healthcare or human resources.
2. Two (2) years (24 months) of work experience comparable to that performed at the Benefits Officer level of this series.Preferred Qualifications
Thorough knowledge of and skill in analyzing and interpreting provision of employee benefit plans University policy and applicable state and federal laws.Work Hours

The Civil Service examination for this classification is based on your application materials and responses to the supplemental questions. No participation other than submission of applicant materials is required from applicants that qualify to take the exam. If you meet the minimum required qualifications for this position you will receive a score calculated based on your education and experience and your name will be placed on the active employment register by exam score.
