We are seeking a forward-thinking Climate Risk Manager to join our team remotely and help us identify assess and manage climate-related risks that could impact our construction and fueling services infrastructure projects and long-term growth. This is a pivotal role that blends technical expertise with strategic planning to help future-proof our operations.
Position Summary
The Climate Risk Manager will lead the development and implementation of climate risk assessments and mitigation strategies across R.W. Mercer Co.s project portfolio and operations. The successful candidate will monitor physical and transitional climate risks support compliance with emerging regulations integrate climate considerations into enterprise risk management (ERM) and guide resilience planning across all business units.
This role requires deep knowledge of climate science and policy as well as practical experience working in the infrastructure construction or energy sectors. Youll work cross-functionally with environmental compliance operations finance and project management teams to ensure that R.W. Mercer Co. remains compliant competitive and climate-resilient.
Key Responsibilities
Climate Risk Assessment & Management
Identify analyze and prioritize physical (e.g. extreme weather flooding) and transition risks (e.g. policy shifts carbon pricing supply chain disruption) relevant to construction fuel systems and infrastructure projects.
Evaluate project sites and facilities for exposure to climate hazards using industry-recognized tools and models.
Develop climate risk heatmaps and integrate findings into the companys ERM and capital planning frameworks.
Scenario Analysis & Resilience Planning
Lead climate scenario analyses based on global climate pathways (e.g. RCPs SSPs) to understand potential business impacts.
Collaborate with engineering and operations teams to identify climate adaptation measures in design materials and timelines.
Recommend asset-level or site-level mitigation strategies (e.g. stormwater upgrades fire risk reduction heat stress planning).
Regulatory Compliance & Reporting
Ensure compliance with relevant local state and federal environmental and climate disclosure regulations including:
TCFD (Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures)
SEC climate risk disclosures (if applicable)
State-level environmental and sustainability reporting (e.g. Michigan EGLE compliance)
Support ESG and sustainability disclosures for clients regulators and internal stakeholders.
Stakeholder Collaboration
Partner with internal departments including Environmental Services Engineering Construction and Fuel Systems to incorporate climate risk insights into operational decisions.
Engage with clients and industry partners to meet increasing climate-related requirements on public and private infrastructure projects.
Educate staff and clients on climate risk considerations and how they affect project delivery and corporate strategy.
Data Tools & Vendor Management
Manage internal and third-party data sources on climate trends hazards emissions and policy developments.
Evaluate and implement climate risk modeling tools resilience assessment platforms or ESG data services relevant to our industry.
Support development of dashboards and KPIs for ongoing climate risk tracking.
Required Qualifications
Bachelors degree in Environmental Science Engineering Risk Management Sustainability Climate Policy or a related field.
5 years of experience in climate risk analysis environmental compliance or resilience planningpreferably in construction infrastructure energy or related sectors.
Strong understanding of climate science risk assessment methodologies and adaptation strategies.
Experience with climate disclosure frameworks (e.g. TCFD) and familiarity with climate-related regulatory trends.
Strong communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Masters degree in Climate Science Environmental Engineering Environmental Economics or Public Policy.
Professional certifications such as:
GARP SCR (Sustainability and Climate Risk)
Certified Environmental Professional (CEP)
PMP or LEED accreditation (useful for infrastructure-related climate planning)
Familiarity with tools and databases such as Climate Central NOAA FEMA Flood Maps or S&P Climate Analytics.
Experience working with remote teams and digital collaboration tools (e.g. MS Teams Smartsheet SharePoint or Asana).
