About the Role

Reporting to the Director of Medical Imaging the Director of MRI will provide strategic and clinical leadership across MRI services at St Vincents Hospital Melbourne and its affiliated Private Hospitals located on the lands of the Wurundjeri people.

You will be responsible for advancing MRI service delivery driving innovation and research and ensuring the highest standards of safety quality and efficiency. The role also plays a key part in academic engagement through the University of Melbourne and in the development of research and teaching within MRI.

This position offers a unique opportunity to lead within a tertiary setting that combines cutting-edge technology strong clinical governance and an active academic partnership.

Position Duties

  • Lead the planning and delivery of high-quality evidence-based MRI services

  • Ensure MRI services meet current and emerging clinical needs including inpatients outpatients emergency and subspecialty care

  • Oversee the adoption of advanced MRI technologies including AI applications and protocol innovation

  • Promote and support MRI-based research and academic collaboration

  • Contribute to medical student and registrar teaching programs

  • Foster a safe respectful and high-performance culture within the MRI team

  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory safety and accreditation standards

  • Participation in the on-call roster

  • Ability to work across Medical Imaging Department St Vincents Private Radiology and MRI

  • Lead or participate in Multi-disciplinary Clinical and Educational Meetings

  • Collaborate with other imaging subspecialties and hospital units to ensure integrated patient care

  • Promote a culture that values high quality clinical care that supports learning and encourages reporting of errors

  • Maintain an appropriate clinical load to help achieve the goals of the Department and organisational targets

  • Establish and develop relationships between MRI and other departments and units within SVHM to develop and optimise clinical service delivery

  • Provide leadership and foster excellence in research.

  • Oversee professional and clinical governance of staff within the Department.

  • Represent St Vincents Hospital Melbourne externally in relevant settings as requested from time to time.

  • In conjunction with Medical Director and Operations Manager ensure all health and safety related policies procedures and directions are complied with


Classifications for this position will range from HM33 - HM41dependent on years of experience with an above award payment available.

Qualifications & Registration

  • Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (RANZCR) or equivalent.

  • Specialist registration with the Medical Board of Australia.

  • Recognised expertise in diagnostic interventional and procedural imaging

  • Current National criminal history check or willing to obtain/ Current NDIS Worker Screening Check or willing to obtain (Select which is applicable)

Medical Imaging & St Vincents Private Radiology

St Vincents Medical Imaging (MI) provides comprehensive diagnostic and interventional imaging services across four key programs:

  • Medical Imaging Department (MID)

  • St Vincents Private Radiology (SVPR)

  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging Centre (MRI)

  • Positron Emission Tomography Centre (PET)

The Magnetic Resonance Imaging Centre is a central component of the imaging service delivering a high volume of complex high-resolution studies to support the full spectrum of medical surgical and subspecialty services across the St Vincents campus. The MRI service operates three scanners two 3 tesla scanners and a 1.5 tesla scanner with plans for a 4th scanner in 2026. MRI services are delivered across both public and private settings supporting emergency inpatient outpatient and research activities. The department plays a critical role in advanced clinical care including neurology oncology cardiac orthopaedics and complex head and neck imaging.

The MRI service is integrated with the broader imaging department which performs over 150000 diagnostic and interventional procedures annually. Imaging supports quaternary-level clinical programs including the Bone and Soft Tissue Sarcoma Service Cardiac Catheter Labs Vascular Labs and Operating Suites.

The work environment at SVHM Medical Imaging is dynamic multidisciplinary and patient-centered with a strong emphasis on clinical excellence education and innovation. Staff work collaboratively across public and private services engaging with medical nursing and allied health teams to provide high-quality evidence-based imaging and interventional services.
