This is a professional services position with the Maine Department of Labors Bureau of Labor Standards which performs work assisting data collection for two of our survey programs. The Survey of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses (SOII) is conducted with the help of our federal partners to compile injury and illness rates for Maine industries. The Construction Wage Survey (CWS) gathers employee payroll information from Maines construction industry to generate prevailing wage rates.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Assisting with data collection that the Division is responsible for including the Survey of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses (SOII) and the Construction Wage Survey (CWS) by monitoring incoming data and assisting respondents unable to submit their data
  • Verifying contact information for establishments chosen to participate in the SOII and CWS surveys.
  • Contacting respondents from SOII and CWS surveys to retrieve missing data and correct inaccurately submitted data.
  • Administering the SafetyWorks! Training Evaluation Database.
  • Conducting educational outreach to Maine businesses on OSHA Recording and Reporting requirements for Occupational Injuries and Illnesses.
  • Performing analysis of data collected in support of Bureau operations.
  • Summarizing findings and organizing reports on state injury rates and hourly compensation in the construction industry.
  • Annual travel to both state and national conferences is required.

Skills or knowledge required:

  • Knowledge of statistical methods.
  • Knowledge of research methods practices and techniques.
  • Knowledge of equipment used in performing statistical operations.
  • Knowledge of data visualization.
  • Ability to analyze statistical data.
  • Ability to clearly present conclusions in written or graphic form.
  • Ability to use standardized computer programs and equipment specifically Excel and other Microsoft Office programs.
  • Ability to work independently and to manage competing priorities to achieve deadlines.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Ability to communicate statistical information and concepts to individuals and groups.
  • Ability to maintain the confidentiality of protected and sensitive information.

Minimum qualifications:

A Bachelors Degree and one (1) year experience in the analysis and presentation of statistical data. Equivalent related experience may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis.

Preference will be given to those applicants:

  • Experience using coding systems such as IDC-10.
  • Certifications with Microsoft Excel or an equivalent tabular data formatting program.
  • Experience using Power BI Yellowfin Tableau or other business analytics software.
  • Presented statistical information and concepts to both the general public and professional audiences.
