A Brief Overview
The individual in this position reports to the Director of Spiritual Care Services and is responsible for overseeing and ensuring the provision of pastoral and spiritual care to patients their loved ones and staff at Stanford Health Care (SHC). Monitors the administration of fiscal material and human resources in the department. Collaborates with the Director of Spiritual Care Services Manager of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) other members of leadership directors clinical and non-clinical staff across SHC to address complex staff and learner support needs and to respond to crisis situations by providing emotional and spiritual support. In collaboration with the Director of Spiritual Care Services develops and maintains policies and procedures in the department. Participates in and contributes to long-range and strategic planning for the Spiritual Care Services individual is responsible for the recruitment support and performance evaluation of those who report directly to this position. Functions as a liaison with the religious community ensuring hospitality and collaboration as appropriate. Assists with the programs of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) teaching intermittently participating in the orientation of CPE students to patient care areas and monitoring their provision of care to patients.

What you will do
  • Ensures the delivery of appropriate interfaith spiritual care to patients their loved ones and staff from all spiritual backgrounds religious traditions or no formal faith group affiliation.
  • Provides 24/7 availability for consultation with team members as well as periodic on-site on-call overnight shifts serving patients families and staff when needed or assigned.
  • Collaborates with the Director Spiritual Care Services to develop and promote specialized chaplaincy positions within hospital service lines.
  • Collaborates with the Director Spiritual Care Services and Manager Spiritual Care Education/CPE Programs to determine areas of coverage by chaplains and CPE students.
  • Manages department personnel including recruiting supporting and evaluating.
  • Manages the Spiritual Care Volunteer program.
  • Actively participates in the delivery of interfaith spiritual care as assigned.
  • Ensures that all requests for spiritual care are responded to in a timely manner.
  • Ensures that needs for prayer rituals and sacraments are met.
  • Supports an interdisciplinary approach to spiritual care throughout SHC.
  • Provides liaison to other departments such as social work volunteers etc.
  • Provides orientation to chaplaincy and spiritual care as requested by other departments.
  • Serves on institutional committees such as Ethics Patient Experience and other committees as
  • appointed.
  • Facilitates the interdisciplinary work of those delivering spiritual care including staff chaplains
  • Relief Chaplains and Spiritual Care Volunteers.
  • Provides orientation and training according to institutional and Joint Commission standards.
  • Manages payroll and on-call scheduling for the department.
  • Supervises Administrative Assistant in on-call scheduling of relief and staff chaplains.
  • Monitors days away and ensures adequate staffing and on-call coverage.
  • Ensures compliance with institutional policy.
  • Serves as department Super-user for training staff on use of the Electronic Medical Record
  • (EPIC) and providing Director Spiritual Care Services with data analysis and delivery.
  • Finance/Budgetary Support/Planning
  • Participates in fiscal planning and is accountable for adhering to the department budget.
  • Participates in setting and accomplishing departmental goals.
  • Assists with cost analysis and identifies ways to increase efficiency and reduce waste.
  • Engages in problem-solving efforts regarding financial resources; promotes cost-effective strategies within the department.
  • Participates in strategic planning for the department related to organizational mission and goals that are congruent with fiscal procedures.
  • Provision of Spiritual Care
  • Actively participates as a member or advisor on interdisciplinary committees related to Spiritual Care bioethics and patient care safety and satisfaction.
  • Provides direct spiritual care in crisis and high-need situations including on-site on-call overnight shifts serving patients families and staff.
  • Consults and communicates with physicians and other members of the interdisciplinary healthcare team.
  • Facilitates memorial services and other spiritual care programming across multiple departments and units.
  • Participates in department and hospital-wide initiatives.
  • Community Outreach
  • Oversees and ensures provision of spiritual care education and training for faculty staff students in the larger SHC community including providing in-service and community programs workshops memorial services and classes in the Stanford School of Medicine.
  • Establishes and maintains strong collaborative relationships with community clergy and related organizations.
  • Contributes to the wider community through publication teaching and research.
  • Other Responsibilities
  • Serves as a consultant in the field of spiritual care.
  • Assumes the administrative and leadership responsibilities of the Director Spiritual Care Services in their absence.
  • Assumes additional responsibilities as assigned.

Education Qualifications
  • Completion of a bachelors degree as well as graduate level theological degree from an institution accredited by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation and/or the Association for Theological Schools.

Experience Qualifications
  • At least three years experience in management
  • Ordination and endorsement by religious group

Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of medical practice and ethical issues that arise in relation to Spiritual Care
  • Excellent aptitude and skill in utilizing various computer programs including WORD Excel and PowerPoint
  • Excellent leadership and communication skills
  • Ability to build and maintain a strong sense of teamwork
  • Proven administration skills

Licenses and Certifications
  • Board Certified Chaplain from a certifying body Association of Professional Chaplains (APC) Neshama: Association of Jewish Chaplains (NAJC) National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC) or Spiritual Care Association (SCA) preferred

Base Pay Scale: Generally starting at $51.15 - $67.78 per hour

The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors including but not limited to internal equity experience education specialty and training. This pay scale is not a promise of a particular wage.
