Position Summary
This position is responsible for coordinating a variety of access services for deaf and hard of hearing students including: sign language interpreters CART or TypeWell transcribers and media captioning services. This position facilitates communication between deaf/hard of hearing and hearing students faculty and visitors to the campus by providing sign language interpreting services. Assesses services for quality and timeliness and creates reports regarding services.
Physical Demands
Work is performed in an office or classroom/lab environment. Work may involve sitting at a computer for extended periods. Additional hours may be required beyond the normal work schedule. Fine manual dexterity is required in interpreting duties. Occasional travel to other work sites may be required.
Duties
Deaf student recruitment and program development: Identifies and targets local and national Deaf serving high schools for recruitment in collaboration with SOU Admissions and Marketing. Programmatically develops SOUs capacity to support Deaf students and hosting Deaf focused campus activities; including but not limited to specialized summer programs admissions events and offering interpreter training and development opportunities on site.
Preferred Qualifications
Masters degree in deaf studies deaf education education special education communication or closely related field. Experience in coordination of interpreting transcription and/or captioning services. Experience in creating captioned media in a variety of file formats.
