The Abrams Legal Fellowship is a new two-year fellowship that focuses on providing legal assistance to documentary filmmakers. As part of their work providing pre-broadcast and pre-publication legal review and other newsgathering support to journalists the legal fellow will provide fair use vetting for documentary filmmakers.
The Abrams Legal Fellowship is an exciting opportunity for an early-career lawyer to play a hands-on role in serving the documentary film community. FRONTLINE the award-winning PBS documentary series produced by GBH in Boston will be the legal fellows primary client. If time permits the fellow may also assist with the general legal work of the Reporters Committee including support for investigative and local reporting around the country. The Abrams Legal Fellow will report directly to our Vice President of Legal Programs and work with other legal fellows and Reporters Committee staff attorneys.
Qualifications :
Candidates for this challenging and rewarding two-year fellowship should have 2-4 post-grad years of experience and a demonstrated interest in the First Amendment media law and intellectual property law. Post-law school judicial clerkship fellowship and/or media practice experience with a law firm or public interest organization is strongly preferred as is background in fair use and copyright law. However recent law school graduates with strong credentials and relevant experience may be considered. Applicants should be admitted to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction or awaiting bar exam results/admission in at least one U.S. jurisdiction at the start of the fellowship term. Applicants who are not members of the D.C. Bar will be required to seek admission. A strong preference will be given to candidates who reside in or are willing to relocate to Washington D.C.
