The New York City Mayors Office is responsible for overseeing city services throughout the five boroughs coordinating public agencies and departments and managing public property. The Team Youll Work With
The Mayors Office for International Affairs (IA) serves as the liaison between the City and New York
Citys international community which includes 193 Permanent Missions 116 Consulates over 70 Trade Commissions and the headquarters of the United Nations. The Office functions as a global platform from which the City can promote its goals for a more just and equitable society showcase the diversity of New Yorkers and share best practices with the world. The Office also works to foster positive relations and to encourage collaboration between the international community and New York Citys agencies and local neighborhoods.
The Problems Youll Solve
The Director of Communications and Speechwriting is responsible for developing and implementing the Offices strategic communications plan to advance NYCs equity agenda. The Director will work directly with the Commissioner Deputy Commissioners and other internal and external stakeholders to develop messaging and identify local and international opportunities for press and social media engagements. This work will include the creation of press releases and advisories social media assets (flyers graphics etc.) and written pieces (articles op-eds blog posts). The Director will also develop remarks and talking points for the Senior Leadership Team. Finally the Director will serve as the main point of contact for media inquiries. This position reports to the Deputy Commissioner for Policy & Strategic Initiative Chief of Staff.
Working closely with the Commissioner the Senior Leadership Team and other internal and external stakeholders the Director of Communications and Speechwriting will:
-Lead the development and implementation of a strategic communications plan including traditional media and digital strategy to support IAs programs projects events and initiatives.
-Develop and manage relationships with media government and international partners to advance IAs communications equities.
-Lead on branding and develop innovative campaigns for the Offices diverse programming.
-Create all social media content including but not limited to Twitter Facebook Instagram as well as content for blogs and other posts with support from the IA Team.
-Oversee drafting and dissemination of media advisories press releases press briefing material and other external communications.
-Coordinate and oversee the creation of newsletters blog posts and other communications assets in collaboration with the IA Team.
-Liaise with the United Nations and the international community and seek ways to continue to strengthen and amplify the connection between these stakeholders.
-Represent the Commissioner and the broader office at events meetings and other public-facing events.
-Work on special projects as assigned.
About You
-You have a minimum of 5 years of experience working in communications preferably in government/international institutions.
-You have experience with developing communication and social media assets including press releases press advisories social media tiles (flyers graphics etc.).
-You have experience writing remarks and talking points for senior leadership/ high-level stakeholders.
-You have the ability to work independently actively seek collaboration and support colleagues in their work.
Minimum Required Qualifications
-You have a Masters degree in a relevant field.
-You have experience working with local and international press outlets and a strong network of press contacts.

Qualifications :
1. A Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college with 24 credits in English journalism or public relations plus five (5) years of full-time paid experience in public relations journalism or advertising including two (2) years in an administrative supervisory or consultative capacity; or
2. A combination of education and/or experience which is equivalent to 1 above. Graduate study in English journalism or public relations may be substituted for up to one year of required experience. However all candidates must have at least two (2) years of administrative supervisory or consultative experience in public relations journalism or advertising.
