Interim Assistant Director of Special Education and Student Services 2025-2026
Position Summary:
The Assistant Director of Special Education and Student Services supports the Director in coordinating and improving special education services district-wide. The role focuses on ensuring compliance promoting inclusive practices and collaborating with staff families and external partners to support student success.
Key Responsibilities:
Program Support and Coordination
- Support the Director in the development implementation and evaluation of district-wide special education programs and services.
- Assist in maintaining accurate and up-to-date program descriptions and departmental procedures.
- Collaborate with school-based teams to ensure consistency in service delivery aligned with student IEPs.
- Assist in coordinating special education transportation needs in collaboration with the transportation department and school staff.
- Support transitions for students with disabilities between grade levels and programs including early childhood and post-secondary planning.
Compliance Regulation and Out-of-District Oversight
- Assist with monitoring compliance with federal and state special education laws including IDEA Section 504 and Massachusetts special education regulations.
- Support preparation for Tiered Focused Monitoring reviews and Problem Resolution System (PRS) responses.
- Coordinate the collection organization and review of student records and documentation for internal audits and DESE reporting.
- Coordinate with school teams to ensure timely meetings accurate documentation and appropriate placements for out-of-district students.
- Serve as a liaison to collaboratives private schools and public agency partners (e.g. DCF DDS DMH) to support program continuity and student needs.
- Maintain documentation and support data tracking related to out-of-district placements.
Staff Support and Supervision
- Supervise and evaluate assigned special education staff under the direction of the Director.
- Support hiring processes onboarding and mentoring of special education personnel.
- Monitor staff caseloads in collaboration with building leaders to ensure equitable distribution of services and resources.
- Provide guidance and coaching to staff around effective practices and compliance expectations.
- Collaborate with the Director to plan and facilitate professional development for special education personnel.
- Coordinate follow-up coaching or support to ensure professional learning is applied effectively.
Grants Budget and Data Coordination
- Assist the Director with coordinating documentation and compliance activities for federal and state grants including Fund Codes 240 and 262 and proportionate share requirements.
- Collaborate with the Director and the business office to support data collection and documentation for Circuit Breaker and Medicaid reimbursement.
- Help compile and analyze service delivery and program data to inform program review and planning.
Family and Community Engagement
- Communicate effectively with families to support collaboration address concerns and reinforce transparency.
- Participate in SEPAC meetings and serve as a liaison to community stakeholders as directed by the Director.
- Represent the Special Education Department in meetings and events as needed.
Qualifications
- Massachusetts licensure as a Special Education Administrator
- Minimum of five years of experience in special education with leadership or team facilitation responsibilities
- Deep understanding of special education laws compliance requirements and best practices in inclusive instruction
- Strong interpersonal organizational and problem-solving skills
- Ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders including families staff and community agencies
