POSITION SUMMARY: This experience-based opportunity gives interns hands-on skills assisting staff in the daily care of animals and exhibits record keeping and interacting with zoo guests. The Animal Care Internship is an unpaid position that offers college credit based on your college or institutions requirements.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS: - Must have completed one-year of college.
- Pursuing a major in zoology biology animal husbandry or other animal related program.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Proof of negative TB test within one year and proof of tetanus shot within ten years.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: - Perform outdoor tasks including the daily feeding and care of domestic and exotic animals and the cleaning and maintenance of animal exhibits.
- Maintain accurate records.
- Communicate effectively using a hand held radio as needed.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: - May be required to assist in the education department with education programs within the zoo.
- Comply with all Binder Park Zoo policies and procedures.
- Participate in team oriented zoo projects as needed.
- May be exposed to hazardous materials.
- Relate positively with diverse groups of people (guests staff and volunteers).
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: N/A
PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS: - Ability to be available for shifts on a flexible schedule that may be long hours weekends evenings and holidays.
- Ability to read speak and write English in order to fulfill job functions in an understandable way.
- Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds.
- Ability to complete tasks outdoors in all weather conditions and in a physically demanding environment.
