POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

CODES ENFORCEMENT OFFICER

City of The Dalles

Police Department

Closing Date: Open Until Filled - First Review July 3 2025

Annual Salary Range: $56501.92 to $69490.23

The City of The Dalles Police Department is looking for their next Codes Enforcement Officer. This position works in the community to investigate complaints enforce assigned codes compliance and cite municipal code violations. This position works with other enforcement agencies and personnel within City of The Dalles boundaries.

What Youll Get To Do:

  • Perform field inspections photograph and document code and ordinance compliance issues including issues with visibility at intersections abandoned vehicles nuisances junk vegetation fencing and the use of recreational vehicles for living purposes.
  • Build valuable relationships and communicate with property owners and residents to gain compliance with codes and ordinances
  • Assist officers with homeless issues including developing or strengthening relationships with partner entities (County Juvenile Parks & Recreation TD Disposal Beautification Committee mental health services etc.).
  • Coordinate with police regarding livability issues.
  • Develop and implement the neighborhood clean-up program.
  • Coordinate with the Community Development Department on land use violations

and enforcement.

  • Assist the Public Works Department with right-of-way violations and enforcement.
  • Communicate with 911 dispatch using a Police radio and be familiar with the 10- codes.
  • Research ordinances and codes deed records abatement codes and be aware of

City Limit and Urban Growth boundaries.

  • Testify in court as needed.

REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to follow established guidelines.
  • Ability to interact with complainants and suspected violators in an objective and equitable manner verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to document report and carefully track numerous cases at once.
  • Ability to navigate in less than desirable conditions climb terrain climb ladders and walk considerable distances.
  • Ability to read understand and implement written material.
  • Experience operating a personal computer and utilizing various software programs.
  • Ability to access Criminal Justice Information Systems secure areas.
  • No felony arrests or convictions

Additionally an ideal candidate would also possess the following preferred qualifications:

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bilingual English-Spanish proficiency
  • Certification from American Association of Code Enforcement or the equivalent in the State of Oregon
  • Previous work experience demonstrating cooperative tactful and service-oriented contact with the public.
  • Previous work experience in code enforcement and/or ordinance and statute enforcement is desirable.
  • Knowledge of The Dalles area is

REQUIRED EDUCATION:

Graduation from high school or equivalent.

LICENSES & CERTIFICATION:

Valid Drivers License.
