Job Description

Reports To: Director Adult Education

The Staff Assistant resides in the Department of Adult Education. The mission of BPS Adult Ed is to provide a variety of flexible programs to ensure that Boston residents have access to quality instruction job training and college and career advising. We honor the diversity of our students by promoting equity and inclusion. BPS Adult Ed annually serves about 800 adult students who want to learn English participate in vocational training improve their academic level and/or graduate from high school. Day and evening as well as in-person online and virtual programs are offered.

Background Overview

The Staff Assistant supports the BPS Adult Ed CTE programs by assisting with classroom activities managing resources and helping students develop practical skills in these fields. The Staff Assistant works a flex schedule and should be available on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:30 PM to 9:30 PM on days BCAHS is in session.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the Senior Director to enhance curriculum and learning resources.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of new instructional techniques and materials.
  • Assist in organizing career days career fairs and other events that promote employment opportunities for CTE students enrolled in our programs.
  • Assist CTE Health instructors in preparing materials equipment and supplies for lessons and demonstrations.
  • Supervise and guide students during hands-on activities and practice sessions.
  • Support students in creating their resumes preparing for interviews and certification exams
  • Provide one-on-one or small group assistance to students needing extra help.
  • Monitor student progress and report concerns to the instructor.
  • Assist with DESE testing
  • Maintain and organize student certification documentation.
  • Manage inventory and ensure that classrooms and vocational shops and lab environments are properly equipped.
  • Assist in scheduling guest speakers field trips and other enrichment activities.
  • Assist in maintaining a clean and safe learning environment.
  • Respond to any emergencies or injuries that occur in the classrooms or vocational shops
  • Assist staff in performing specific duties as assigned or undertaking specialized tasks.
  • Assist in establishing and maintaining standards of student behavior.
  • Serve as the tardiness desk attendant.
  • Assist in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct.
  • Perform various office assistance tasks such as photocopying filing answering the telephone mailroom pick-up and deliveries.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with teachersstudents and associates.
  • Perform related work as required

Qualifications Required:

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Current authorization to work in the United States - Candidates must have such authorization by their first day of employment.
  • Experience: Previous experience in a vocational training healthcare setting or educational environment.
  • Strong organizational and multitasking abilities.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with adult high school students.

Qualifications Preferred:

  • Associates Degree or Experience in urban schools.
  • BPS values linguistic diversity and believes candidates who speak another language add value to the classroom school and district culture and diversity. BPS is particularly interested in candidates fluent in one of BPSs official languages: Spanish Creole (Cape Verdean) Creole (Haitian) Chinese Vietnamese Portuguese & Somali.

Terms:Managerial Tier B

NOTE: School-based managerial employees will work 223 days between July 1st and June 30th each year. The 223 day work-year will include the 180 days in which school is in session and the additional days will be determined by the employee and the principal or headmaster of the school.

School-based managerial employees are not eligible for vacation time or compensatory time. In the event of school cancellation due to snow or inclement weather school-based managerial employees need not report to work.
