DescriptionUnder the general supervision of a licensed physician evaluates and treats patients with medical and/or surgical problems and assists in delivery of emergency care within the scope of emergency medicine practice. Performs routine histories and physical examinations; performs and/or interprets diagnostic tests and/or procedures as detailed in the department specific scope of practice. May participate in training recruiting quality assurance activities and other administrative roles and/or functions as requested by department leadership. Delivers direct patient care.
ResponsibilitiesUnder the general supervision of a licensed physician:
- Participate in the initial evaluation and management of ED patients from their initial presentation through disposition decision. Perform complete patient history and physical examination; order and interpret appropriate laboratory tests standardized radiological studies and initiate treatment. Perform routine or emergency procedures including but not limited to slit lamp exam repair of wounds/lacerations irrigation and drainage of abscesses insertion of nasogastric tubes and intravenous lines sampling of arterial blood removal of foreign bodies etc.
- Writes appropriately authorized prescriptions and orders medications in accordance with NYS department of Education regulations; may prescribe controlled substances under appropriate physician countersignature.
- Confers with attending physicians to ensure delivery of optimum quality of patient care and to keep them apprised of clinical developments patient concerns etc.
- Performs other duties pursuant to clinical responsibility such as arranging follow-up for patients obtaining informed consent from patient recalling patients for further evaluation and treatment. Informs patients of necessary post-discharge instructions as required.
- Documents appropriate entries in patients electronic medical record which may include but not limited to history & physical exam procedures performed and medical decision making.
- Completes and documents participation in continuing medical education required of physician assistants in order to meet requirements for certification including assigned lectures and conferences.
- Perform the medical screening exam.
- Can place initial disposition order and documentation of such disposition order after discussion with supervisory attending.
Qualifications-Job requires completion of NYS-approved program for training of physician assistant minimum Bachelor of Science program/degree in Physician Assistant studies.
-1 to 2-years of emergency medicine experience is preferred however it is not required to apply for the position.
-Registration required with New York State as Physician Assistant or Specialist Assistant.
-Certification with National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA); American Heart Association or equivalent as provider of Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Life Support (PALS).
-Basic Microsoft Office suite experience required.
-Knowledge on how to use an electronic medical record such as EPIC.
