General Description / Primary Purpose

This position works with the Assistant Director to manage the staff programs and operations of the Competition Pool Complex. Under the supervision of the assistant director this position has primary responsibility for staffing & programming.

Job Function

Supervise Lifeguards:

  • Under the supervision of the Assistant Director assist in these supervisory roles.
  • Oversee the daily activities of the lifeguard team.
  • Schedule lifeguard shifts and ensure adequate coverage during all operating hours.
  • Monitor lifeguard performance and provide feedback and guidance as needed.

Assist with Lifeguard Staff Training and In-Service:

  • Coordinate and conduct training sessions for new and existing lifeguards.
  • Organize regular in-service training to keep lifeguard skills up-to-date.
  • Ensure all lifeguards are certified and maintain their certifications.

Oversee Pool Programming:

  • Collaborate with Osprey Life and Productions and other campus departments to develop and implement pool programs for students.
  • Assist in organizing events and activities that promote student engagement and wellness.

Support Risk Management:

  • Conduct regular safety audits and inspections of pool facilities
  • Ensure compliance with all safety regulations and standards.
  • Assist the Assistant Director through collaboration with the Department of Recreation and Wellness to implement and maintain risk management protocols.

Assist with Pool Scheduling:

  • Work with the Assistant Director to plan and coordinate pool usage for various programs and events internal and external to the university.
  • Communicate schedule changes and updates to staff and pool users.
  • Ensure the pool is prepared and staffed for all scheduled activities.

Assist with Pool Operations:

  • Support routine maintenance and inspections of the pool and related facilities.
  • Advise on repair needs and coordinate with maintenance staff to address issues promptly.
  • Ensure the pool environment is clean safe and well-maintained.

This position is an integral part of our unit where teamwork and collaboration are essential. We believe in supporting each other to achieve our collective goals. Therefore this position will be expected to work closely with colleagues and when necessary assist in other capacities to ensure the overall success of our objectives.

The coordinator and assistant director may cross-train on essential responsibilities to ensure continuity of business during the absence of the other.

Statement on Meetings & Committees:

As part of this role the individual will be expected to actively participate in various department staff meetings and committees. This includes being available to attend committee meetings contribute to discussions and collaborate with colleagues to achieve the committees objectives. The individual should demonstrate a commitment to the departments goals and be willing to dedicate time and effort to support committee activities. This involvement is crucial for fostering a collaborative environment and ensuring the successful implementation of departmental initiatives.

  • Current lifeguard certification (e.g. Red Cross YMCA or equivalent).
  • Previous experience in a supervisory role preferably in an aquatic environment.
  • Strong knowledge of pool safety and risk management practices.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills.
  • Ability to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends.

Required Qualifications:

This position requires either (a) Masters degree from an acceptable accredited institution in a directly related area of specialization ; (b) Bachelors degree from an acceptable accredited institution in a directly related area of specialization and two years of experience directly related to the job functions; or (c ) 6 years of direct experience.
