The Denver Sheriff Department is the largest Sheriff Department agency in the state of Colorado and is comprised of many divisions and diverse operations with over 900 uniformed and non-uniformed staff members. These operations include two separate jails security for the District and County court systems state transportation for persons in custody extradition duties fugitive and K-9 units a Community Corrections and Work Release facility and security at Denver Health Medical Center.
The Security Specialists provide support to Deputy Sheriffs by maintaining security in a detention facility through the operation of security controls and equipment related to the custody and movement of persons in role is critical to maintaining the safety security and orderly operation of the facility by ensuring situational awareness identifying potential safety concerns and supporting prompt response to incidents or emergencies.
This position involves interactions with employees members of the public and minimal direct interaction with persons in custody.
While Security Specialists do not typically have face-to-face contact with persons in custody there may be limited exposure during movement to and from assigned posts or in common areas.
Denver Sheriff Department is a 24-hour operation and requires shift work including nights weekends and holidays.
The Security Specialist positions are assigned throughout various locations within the agency and assignments upon successful completion of training based on operational needs and staffing requirements:
Monitors the movement and activity of deputies staff and professional visitors within the detention facility using closed-circuit television (CCTV) radio communication and intercom systems.
Monitors and manages the movement of persons in custody within secured areas of the facility by operating electronic control systems for doors elevators and other access points to ensure safety and security.
Provides administrative support in areas related to the management and control of persons in custody specifically in non-contact roles.
Maintains accurate records organizes files and supports custody operations through documentation data entry and coordination tasks that contribute to the overall safety efficiency and compliance of the facility.
Monitors documents and tracks the movement and population of persons in custody including logging visitations professional contacts medical incidents incident reports and other critical information. Ensures accurate record-keeping to support facility operations maintain safety and security and comply with departmental policies and legal requirements.
Monitors and controls radio traffic within the detention facility which includes shutting down non-emergency traffic during a crisis situation.
Monitors emergency alarms and notifies the Deputy Sheriff Sergeant on duty when an alarm indicates an emergency situation.
Observes controls for alarms doors and elevators to ensure systems are operable.
Monitors the visitation of persons in custody and screens individuals seeking access to the detention facilitys secured areas.
