Job Description

Description

A Landscaping Specialist designs installs and maintains outdoor spaces blending aesthetic appeal with functional and sustainable practices. They are knowledgeable in horticulture landscape design and often possess strong practical skills. Their responsibilities can range from planting and maintaining greenery to installing hardscapes like patios and walkways and even managing irrigation and lighting systems.

Examples of Duties

Key Responsibilities:

  • Landscape Design and Planning:
Assessing site conditions creating design plans selecting appropriate plants and determining material needs.
  • Planting and Maintenance:
Planting trees shrubs flowers and lawns; maintaining gardens lawns and other greenery through tasks like mowing trimming pruning and weeding.
  • Hardscaping:
Installing features like patios walkways retaining walls and other structures.
  • Irrigation and Lighting:
Installing and maintaining sprinkler systems and outdoor lighting.
  • Pest and Disease Management:
Identifying and treating plant diseases and pest infestations including applying pesticides when necessary.
  • Equipment Operation and Maintenance:
Operating landscaping equipment like mowers trimmers and other tools as well as ensuring their proper maintenance.
Skills and Qualifications:
  • Horticultural Knowledge: Understanding plant types soil conditions and regional climate conditions.
  • Landscape Design Principles: Knowledge of design elements aesthetics and spatial planning along with the Fundamentals of Landscaping.
  • Physical Stamina and Strength: Landscaping work can be physically demanding requiring the ability to lift heavy objects work outdoors in various weather conditions and perform repetitive tasks.
  • Problem-Solving and Critical Thinking: Being able to assess issues identify solutions and make informed decisions about landscape management.
  • Communication and Customer Service: Effectively communicating with University personnel understanding their needs and providing excellent customer service.
  • Equipment Operation and Maintenance: Being able to safely operate and maintain landscaping equipment.
  • Safety Awareness: Prioritizing personal and team safety when working with tools equipment and chemicals.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Typical Qualifications

High School Diploma and/or GED along with minimum of one year vocational or technical training required.
One year of directly related work experience may be substituted for post-secondary training.
Must have valid drivers license.
Position requires ability to lift objects 25-50 pounds and willingness to work in adverse conditions.
