Utility Locator
We are seeking a reliable and detail-oriented Utility Locator to join our field services team. The Utility Locator is responsible for identifying and marking underground telecommunication lines and related infrastructure to ensure safe excavation and construction work. This position requires strong observational skills a solid understanding of utility mapping and electronic locating equipment and a commitment to safety and accuracy.
Responsibilities:
- Accurately locate identify and mark underground telecommunication utilities using specialized locating equipment.
- Interpret utility maps blueprints and schematics to determine the location of buried lines.
- Conduct field investigations and site assessments before marking out utilities.
- Communicate with contractors construction crews and project managers to coordinate locate requests.
- Ensure all locates are performed in accordance with applicable local state and federal regulations (e.g. 811 One Call).
- Maintain complete and accurate records of work completed including photos GPS coordinates and service reports.
- Report any identified discrepancies damage or safety hazards to appropriate personnel.
- Travel to markets across Ohio Pennsylvania and Michigan.
- Operate and maintain locating equipment vehicles and field tools.
- Work independently in varying weather conditions and terrain.
- If you are assigned a company vehicle you will be responsible for stocking cleaning and report on maintenance needs to the Fleet Manager.
Qualifications:
- Valid drivers license with a clean driving record.
- This job will include traveling up to 5 days a week. You will receive hotel accommodations and per diem for every night you spend the night.
- Overtime is required and you must be able to work nights weekends and holidays dependent on the job and the companys needs.
- Able to perform night maintenance and emergency callouts.
- Strong understanding of utility locating practices and safety procedures.
- Ability to read and interpret maps drawings and blueprints.
- Experience with locating equipment (e.g. Vivax-Metrotech RD8100 or equivalent).
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and walk long distances.
- Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
- Detail-oriented and able to document work accurately.
- Prior experience locating telecommunication lines is preferred but not required.
- Knowledge of state or regional utility locating laws and the 811 system.
- Certification from a recognized locating training program is preferred but is not required.
