Job Description:

The Nebraska State Historical Society is seeking a dynamic and experienced HR Generalist to join our team! This position plays a critical role in supporting the human resources functions of the agency ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations and fostering a positive and productive work environment. The HR Generalist will be responsible for a wide range of HR duties including recruitment onboarding employee relations payroll benefits administration and HR recordkeeping. The ideal candidate will be proficient in Workday and possess a strong understanding of state personnel rules labor contracts and HR best practices.

Job duties

  • Utilize Workday to manage the full recruitment lifecycle including creating job postings screening applicants conducting interviews in collaboration with hiring managers and applying established hiring evaluation criteria.

  • Coordinate present and evaluate orientation materials for new teammates explaining State Personnel rules labor contracts agency personnel policies and state insurance retirement and benefits packages.

  • Provide training for agency teammates to explain personnel matters.

  • Serve as a primary point of contact for teammates and supervisors regarding questions on laws State Personnel rules labor contracts agency personnel policies and procedures and state health insurance leave and other benefits.

  • Draft memos and other communications on personnel matters.

  • Collect information identify causes and offer suggestions for the disposition of grievances and disciplinary actions; Participate in grievance hearings and assist senior management or other personnel officials in preparing grievance/disciplinary responses.

  • Manage the agencys payroll processing including all necessary tasks to ensure accurate and timely payroll.

  • Manage agency personnel file records and other HR-related documentation ensuring the security proper storage and efficient retrieval of confidential personnel information.

  • Manage FMLA and director-approved Leave Without Pay requests ensuring compliance with required timeframes and proper administration of donation programs according to contracts.

  • Manage work compensation requests ensuring claims are reported and administered correctly with payroll.

  • Write appropriate Position Description Questionnaires (PDQs) and job descriptions for positions.

  • Complete classification and compensation change requests and facilitate the proper approval processes.

  • Other duties as assigned within the scope of the classification.

Requirements / Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: Two years of coursework or training in personnel management business administration public administration or office/administrative or three years of related experience.

Preferred Qualifications: HR information systems specifically Workday. State Personnel rules regulations and procedures.

Other: Regular and reliable attendance required.



Knowledge Skills and Abilities: Knowledge in Human Resources principles and practices including recruitment compensation benefits employee relations and compliance. State and federal employment laws and regulations (e.g. FMLA Workers Compensation). Payroll processing and best practices. Confidentiality and data security protocols related to HR information. Excellent written and verbal communication including the ability to explain complex HR information clearly and concisely. Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build rapport and effectively interact with individuals at all levels of the organization. Analytical and problem-solving skills particularly in identifying and resolving HR-related issues. Attention to detail and accuracy in managing HR data and processes. Interviewing and selection techniques. Conflict resolution and mediation. Microsoft Office Suite (Word Excel PowerPoint Outlook). Ability to maintain a high level of professionalism and ethical conduct. Research and analyze information to make informed decisions. Be organization and possess time management skills with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
