Summary


**This SDA position is open to all qualified internal King County Facilities Mechanic & Mechanic Leads Rail classification per ATU 587 Labor Contract Exhibit D employees who have completedtheir initial probationary period. **

King County Metros Rails division is recruiting for one (1) SDA Lead RailFacilities Mechanic positionprimarilyresponsible fortraining Rail Facilities Mechanics and assigning and coordinating the work of Rail Facilities Mechanics. Work involves providingtraining technical assistance and lead direction to crew members engaged in maintenance repair and upgrades of the Light Rail operating facilities supporting systems and position works directly with the Facilities Chief and responsibilities will also include the coordinationand oversight of work performed by outside contractorsworking in an assortmentof crafts engaged in a variety of building and systems maintenance repair and enhancement. This is a working Lead position and other typical duties of a Rail Facilities Mechanic may also be performed. The individual in this role will have an interest in helping others learn and succeed and strong communication and relationship-building skills.

About King County Metros Rail Division

King County Metro Transits Rail Division manages and maintains Sound Transits Link light rail service and City of Seattles streetcar system. Link light rail currently spans a 33-mile route from SeaTac to Lynnwood and a 6.6-mile route from Redmond to South Bellevue. By the end of 2026 light rail is projected to expand to nearly 60 route miles adding seven new stations. Additional expansions to the Link system will be coming online for years to come.
Seattle Streetcar includes the 1.3-mile South Lake Union line and the 2.5-mile First Hill line proudly serving the diverse and vibrant communities around Seattles downtown core. These rail services complement Metros extensive fixed route bus system and mobility services. Puget Sound transit agencies are collaborating to create an integrated transit network that enables people to travel farther faster and more easily.

This position is considered safety sensitive. Applicants for positions defined as safety sensitive are required to undergo drug testing prior to employment and subsequent to commencement of employment will be subject to random post accident reasonable suspicion return to duty and follow up drug and alcohol testing in compliance with federal DOT alcohol and controlled substances testing program protocols.

Who may apply:This SDA position is open to all qualified internal King County Metro applicants with a minimum of two (2) years of experience within the King County Metro Facilities Mechanic (Rail) classification per ATU 587 Labor Contract Exhibit D and have completed their initial probationary period.

1st Shift: $61.01
2nd Shift: $64.06
3rd Shift: $65.59

Job Duties

  • The primary responsibility of this position is to train Rail Facilities Mechanics. This includes the following:
    • Train other Rail Facilities Mechanics onrequired maintenance operations standard operating procedures and safety procedures.
    • Collaborate and communicate closely with Facilities Chiefs and Superintendents and Instructional Designer to develop and implement training materials and program for Facilities Mechanics.
    • Deliver equitable training program to Facilities Mechanics.
    • Make recommendations for improvement of Facilities Mechanics training.
    • Ensure accurate and timely reporting and recording of training completions.
    • Respond to questions and provide technical advice on project requirements specifications and material requirements.
  • Duties also include:
    • Provide feedback to the Chief/Superintendenton employee and teamwork performance as well as any attendance issues.
    • Monitorwork/trainingassignmentstoensurethey have been completed in a quality mannerand within established timeframes.
    • Advisecrewmemberswhentheirworkisdeficientorisinviolationofestablishedregulationsandprocedures.
    • Maintain varied records including work performed time spent materials used operating logs and related information; enter and extract data using automated systems; and maintain manual records as required.
    • Participate in the development and implementation of a comprehensive preventative maintenance program for functions and service checks on facilities buildings and equipment; develop specifications for and purchase new equipment and materials.
  • The Lead in this role may also:
    • Planschedule and coordinate activities andwork with other trades divisions and outside agencies and contractors; inspect work completed by contractor.
    • Perform a variety of plumbing carpentry and related building trades work as well asreadinterpret and apply blueprints and other drawings.
    • Design layout and fabricate various metal components parts or fixtures used in the repair maintenance and modificationof facilitiesbuildingsand equipment;performshopand fieldweldinglayout cuttingand fitting; andoperate a variety of welding and burning equipment.
    • Installmaintainrepair andmodify equipment andsystem assemblies; installattach or brace appurtenances to buildings walls ceilings and floors.
    • Respond to emergency situations. Prioritize and determine work priorities for emergency maintenance tasks inthe absence of on-site supervision.
    • Working Leads are responsible for coordinating the work of and providing technical assistance to facilities mechanics responsible for maintaining all public and operating facilities equipment and associated components. This includes maintaining and repairing a variety of plumbing tunnel and associated systems and equipment.
    • Assign work in accordance with work operating requirements and workload demands; control and monitor work flow.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.

Experience Qualifications Knowledge Skills

RequiredQualifications:

  • 5 years of journey-level work experience in the plumbing welding mechanical or Fire and Life Safety field AND experience training or teaching peers to complete hands-on tasks accurately and safely OR any equivalent combination of experience and education which provides the applicant with the desired skills knowledge and ability required to perform the work.
  • 2 years experience in a King County Metro Rail Facilities Mechanic position.
AdditionalQualificationsinclude:
  • Journey-level knowledge of and skill in the principles practices techniques tools and equipment ofthe plumbing pipe and steam fitting trades.

Physical requirements:This position is required to frequently lift and carry objects up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift objects up to 100 pounds with assistance. This job also requires frequent walking reaching climbing kneeling and stooping; and safe operation of power tools. Physical ability to is required to perform heavy manual labor exert physical effort while standing walking or lifting materials tools and objects weighting up to 100 pounds such as paving breakers joint bars ties and tamping tools.

Work schedule:This non-exemptposition is overtime eligible.
