Job Description

Title: Director of Compliance

General Summary

Direct coordinate implement and consistently improve upon a comprehensive systematic NCAA compliance monitoring program to ensure policies procedures and protocols of the Eastern Michigan University Office of Athletic Compliance are effectively ensuring control over the institutions Intercollegiate Athletics Program.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • The Director of Compliance will assist in the development implementation and management of a comprehensive athletics compliance program including creation and development of policies and procedures to ensure compliance with applicable NCAA Conference and university rules and regulations.
  • Assist in strategic planning and positioning of the Compliance Department. Responsible for maintaining institutional compliance with NCAA Conference and university rules and will report to the associate athletics director for compliance.
  • Serve as primary point of contact and coordinate the administration of all compliance duties and functions for select sports.
  • Specific areas include eligibility (initial transfer continuing) financial aid & NLIs recruiting personnel playing and practice seasons awards and benefits processing waivers interpretations and rules monitoring to ensure adherence to university Conference and NCAA regulations.
  • Play a significant role in the overall rules education program that serves a broad constituent base including responsible for the dissemination of NCAA legislation to coaches athletics staff and administrators student-athletes key university personnel boosters and external constituents in a timely manner.
  • Coordinate the orientation process and compliance on-boarding of new coaches and staff.
  • Work closely with other departments and offices on campus (e.g. Admissions Student Financial Aid Office Student Business Services Registrar Housing and Residence Life Dining Services Office of International Students & Services) to implement and maintain appropriate compliance procedures.
  • Assist in the investigation of possible violations of NCAA regulations.
  • Assist with the response to internal audits and external reviews of the compliance programs.
  • In conjunction with Sports Medicine department assist in coordination of drug testing program.
  • Coordinate all institutional camps and clinics and coaches and staff participating in non-institutional camps and clinics.
  • Serve as primary liaison for and coordinate usage of recruiting and compliance software.
  • Coordinate internship and program with Sports Management Department and externship programs local law school partners.
  • Assist with various other tasks and duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelors degree and an intimate knowledge of all NCAA Division I rules and regulations is required.

A minimum of three (3) years athletics compliance-related experience is required.

Experience with NCAA Compliance Assistant internet (CAi) NCAA Academic Performance Program (APP) NCAA Legislative Services Database for the internet (LDSBi) recruiting/compliance software (preferably ARMS) and Microsoft Office (Word Excel Access Outlook) is required.

Outstanding writing reasoning and critical thinking skills is required.

Ability to manage and direct multiple collaborative projects and systems in a fast-paced environment.

The ability to work independently and make continuous improvement upon current monitoring systems and job duties is required.

An interest ability and understanding of how to work collaboratively with Division I student-athletes and coaches is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

A Law degree or Masters degree in athletics administration management or business is preferred.

Have a comprehensive understanding of the ARMS software and NCAA Compliance Assistant software and their monitoring applications.

Five (5) or more years direct and demonstrable full-time experience in the implementation of a comprehensive Division I athletic compliance program is preferred.

Experience working directly with a Division I football program is preferred.
