THE POSITION
Are you passionate about wildlife environmental education and community engagement The County of Santa Barbara is accepting applications for one (1) part-time (.75 FTE) Assistant Naturalist vacancy. This dynamic and creative individual will help plan develop and deliver natural science and historical interpretive programs at beautiful Cachuma Lake.
As an Assistant Naturalist youll play a key role in connecting the public to the rich ecological and historical significance of the area through hands-on activities educational presentations and immersive experiences. Additional Qualifications:
Knowledge of: natural history; plant animal freshwater and environmental biology; English usage and grammar; administrative skills including knowledge of Microsoft Office Word Excel and PowerPoint; Spanish speaking is a plus but not required.
Ability to: learn the history and plant and animal biology of the area; make group presentations; communicate technical information to a wide range of people; present a positive public image; exercise tact and independent judgement in dealing with the public; establish and maintain working relationships with co-workers representatives of other organizations and agencies and the general public; coordinate activities; research and compile data; analyze and interpret technical data identify needs develop solutions and make recommendations; prepare a variety of written reports and documents; operate audio-visual equipment; operate an engine propelled pontoon boat or water craft and related safety and rescue practices ; work independently.
Incumbents will be required to work weekends holidays and shifts wear a uniform and work outdoors under varied weather conditions; facilitate programs when lead Naturalist is away.
SELECTION PROCESS:
Candidates must receive a percentage score of at least 70 on the supplemental questionnaire ranking to be placed on an employment list. An adjustment may be made to raw scores based on factors listed in Civil Service Rule VI. Those candidates who are successful in the selection process will have their names placed on the employment list for a minimum of three months. At the time the employment list is established all candidates will receive an email notice of their score on the exam(s) and exact duration of the employment list.
Veterans Preference Points: Veterans preference credit is applicable for this recruitment (5 points for veterans 10 points for disabled veterans). To be eligible for this credit you must be applying for this position within five years from your most recent date of: (1) honorable discharge from active military service; or (2) discharge from a military or veterans hospital where treatment and confinement were for a disability incurred during active military service; or (3) completion of education or training funded by a Federal Educational Assistance Act. No time limit exists for veterans with 30% or more disability. To receive veterans preference points you must: (1) check the Veterans Preference Points box on the employment application form (2) submit a copy of your Form DD214 to the Human Resources Department on or before the online financial office professional examination test date and (3) pass all phases of the examination process. The preference points will be added to your final test score.
