Job Description Summary:

The Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Kansas Medical Center (KUMC) invites applications for a tenure track faculty position at the Assistant or Associate Professor level with research programs centered around cystic fibrosis or tobacco/e-cigarettes. The newly created GEID Division is currently undergoing expansion and is looking to increase the number of faculty to synergize with ongoing research programs in the Division the Department and KUMC.

The successful candidate must establish a robust innovative and externally funded research program and contribute to mentorship activities at the medical and graduate level. Applicants must hold a Ph.D. and/or M.D. (or similar doctoral degree) with preference given to candidates who bring innovative approaches that complement existing expertise within the Division and the KUMC research community. The successful applicant will also benefit from newly renovated research facilities strong institutional and departmental commitments to career development and mentoring and a vibrant collaborative research environment that brings together fundamental biology and clinical science and creates unique research opportunities. Job Description:

Position Overview:

• Conduct dissemination and implementation research in collaboration with existing faculty departments and centers at KUMC

• Pursue new funding opportunities in dissemination and implementation research that enhances the ability of providers systems employers and communities to achieve quality outcomes; promote primary and secondary disease prevention promote more effective and efficient delivery of healthcare

• Train and/or teach dissemination and implementation research methodology and core competencies

• Opportunity to participate in leadership in the Frontiers Institute of Clinical and Translational Science (ICTS)

• Co-appointment in a basic science department if required.

Eligibility:

• Ph.D. in biological sciences biomedical sciences molecular biology or equivalent degree

• The ideal candidate will have a record of extramural funding and prior teaching experience

• Strong record in peer-reviewed scholarship as well as demonstrated excellence in teaching and educational leadership in diverse learning environments

The Department of Internal Medicine:

The mission for The Department of Internal Medicine is to advance the power of medicine by providing a stimulating supportive climate where faculty scientists trainees and support staff strive for excellence and collaborate freely to achieve shared goals. The Department is made up of fourteen divisions and has experienced tremendous growth in the past seven years growing from 145 faculty in FY11 to 309 faculty in FY20 and from 67000 clinic visits in FY11 to 158000 in FY19.

• The Department of Internal Medicine has a thriving and rapidly expanding research portfolio that spans the entire spectrum of basic and clinical research from genes and molecules to translation of discoveries in the community. With a new Research Office the Department has witnessed unsurpassed enthusiasm and support for research over the past year. Internal Medicine active grant funding is over $43M.

• Following a national search as of June 1 2018 the Department of Internal Medicine has a new Chair Dr. Matthias Salathe a nationally recognized pulmonologist and researcher who joined KU from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.

• Dr. Robert Tarran recently recruited from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is the new Division Chief of the Division of Genetic Environmental and Inhalational Diseases. He joined KUMC to found this new division in July of 2023.

The Department of Genetic Environmental and Inhalational Diseases:

The Division of Genetic Environmental and Inhalational Disease is a newly-formed division that is actively recruiting faculty members and staff. Our mission is to perform the highest quality basic and translational science to better inform scientists clinicians and the general public.

Our initial focus will be on the multi-organ genetic disease cystic fibrosis and on combustible tobacco/e-cigarette exposures and other disease areas will be added as we expand. We are also happy to collaborate on other disease areas as needed.

GEID welcomes graduate students from the IGBPS umbrella program to rotate through our labs. GEID faculty are experienced with mentoring and successfully graduating undergraduates Masters and PhD students and fellows.

While GEID is not a clinical division our faculty also welcome rotations from clinical fellows. Both basic science and translational projects can be offered at all levels.

• The NCI-funded University of Kansas Cancer Center includes: The University of Kansas Medical Center (KUMC) campuses in Kansas City Wichita and Salina the University of Kansas in Lawrence (KU-Lawrence) and its School of Pharmacy The University of Kansas Hospital the Stowers Institute for Medical Research and Childrens Mercy. KU Cancer Center researchers currently have more than 600 published papers 75 NCI-funded studies and $69.8 million in extramural funding from government private and national philanthropic organizations

• The NIA-funded University of Kansas Alzheimers Disease Center (ADC) spans the KUMC and Lawrence campuses and employs 10 faculty and 30 other support staff has the programmatic goal of supporting facilitating and enhancing research that provides insight in AD and brain aging. Its main thematic goal is to advance our understanding of how brain bioenergetics change during AD and aging. KU ADC currently supports over 20 funded investigator-initiated studies and participates in 4 national multisite trials sponsored by the Alzheimer Disease Cooperative Study.

• The new Center for Rural Health that is aligned with a robust rural practice-based research network that has garnered more than $20M in extramural funding.
