$94214.00 - $117768.00About the Office of the Chief Risk Officer:Position Purpose:
Reporting to the Senior Manager Emergency Management the Senior Specialist Fire Safety provides leadership in the planning coordination and administration of the Universitys Fire Safety Management (FSM) Program impacting all properties and activities conducted by the University. They ensure compliance with the Ontario Fire Code and related regulations develop and implement fire safety policies and procedures oversee fire safety training and exercises and provide expert advice to the University community. The role also includes conducting building inspections oversight on the proper maintenance of fire safety equipment collaborating with internal and external stakeholders to enhance campus fire safety and resolving issues as they occur.
The incumbent is responsible for keeping abreast of the external regulatory environment to ensure that the risks and impacts associated with fire safety are well communicated to the University community and implemented in a fashion consistent with the strategic and financial objectives of the University.
In this role your responsibilities will include:
Provide expert advice on the Ontario Fire Code and its application to campus infrastructure and activities to internal stakeholders.
Develop implement maintain and continuously improve fire safety plans and procedures to ensure compliance with legislation regulations and best practices.
Conduct fire safety risk assessments building inspections and audits to identify deficiencies and ensure corrective actions are taken.
Monitor fire safety equipment and life safety systems ensuring they meet operational and compliance standards.
Monitor hotwork permits and fire watches and ensure compliance with safety protocols related to high fire-risk activities.
Develop and deliver fire safety training awareness programs and fire evacuation drills for the University community.
Respond to fire-related incidents conduct investigations and implement necessary corrective actions.
Oversee and coordinate campus building evacuation response mechanism with key stakeholders.
Collaborate with Facilities Environmental Health & Safety Protection Services and Emergency Management to ensure alignment and coordination of fire safety initiatives.
Establish and maintain partnerships with external stakeholders including the Ottawa Fire Service and other agencies to enhance fire safety preparedness and response.
Stay current on emerging fire safety risks industry trends and regulatory changes to continuously improve the Fire Safety Management Program.
Prepare reports and documentation on fire safety activities compliance status and program effectiveness for internal and external stakeholders.
What you will bring:
Post-secondary degree diploma or certifications related to fire safety fire prevention or other specialization relevant to the position; or a combination of education training and/or work experience.
Professional certification in NFPA Fire Protection Specialist and Fire Inspector I & II.
Minimum of seven (7) years experience in the field of fire prevention fire safety and fire investigations preferably in a complex environment.
Demonstrated expert knowledge of the Ontario Fire Code and NFPA Standards and the ability to apply them in a complex environment.
Experience in interpreting explaining and applying fire codes regulations and procedures.
Knowledge in fire behaviour chemistry of fire and building components fire detection water-based fire suppression systems and fire alarm systems.
Demonstrated knowledge of hazardous materials management as it relates to fire safety and response.
Knowledgeable of building codes as they relate to fire safety and fire safety equipment.
Experience in reading blueprints and building plans.
Basic knowledge of OH&S including an understanding of the Ontario Health and Safety Act core requirements.
Excellent organizational and conflict resolution skills and ability to work well under pressure.
Experience in training leadership and presentation skills.
Demonstrates tact diplomacy and professionalism in dealing with a multicultural and pluralistic community.
Bilingualism French and English (spoken and written).
