Heritage Big Picture School
This fall the Marysville School District will be partnering with Big Picture Learning and the Big Picture Learning Native American Initiative to relaunch Heritage High school as a Big Picture School. Big Picture is a project- based approach to immersing students in work they are passionate about in order to develop skills habits and knowledge to actualize their post-high school plans overcome obstacles to their well-being and contribute positively to their communities. As opposed to a focus on seat time teachers serve as advisors to the same group of 15 students throughout their 4-year high school journey and work with those students to develop individualized learning plans that include a substantial amount of learning off campus through internships apprenticeships and rigorous interest-based projects.
As a school operating on tribal lands with a strong partnership with The Tulalip Tribes an important aspect of this reenvisioning of Heritage High School will be the partnership with theBig Picture Learning (BPL) Native American Initiative which strives to:
- Ensure that each BPL network school is prepared to meet the unique cultural and linguistic needs of their American Indian and Alaska Native (AIAN) students as guaranteed by the treaties.
- Decolonize and indigenize Big Picture Learning network schools so that all students may benefit from the wide breadth of cultural knowledge and worldviews of Indigenous peoples.
The Role of a Big Picture Principal
- The Big Picture principal is an educational visionary an instructional leader and manages the team of advisors in her/his school
- Within the community the principal is the visible spokesperson for the school the fundraiser the political and community networker
- The principal organizes plans and runs regular staff development sessions including staff meetings and retreats
- The principal supervises staff reflects upon her/his observations of staff members in their work environments and provides regular feedback
- Big Picture principals participate in on-going year-round professional development and are supported in the start-up years of operation by Big Picture Learning. Big Picture principals also actively participate in professional development and conferences designed especially for the Big Picture network of schools.
Heritage Big Picture High School shares a campus with Legacy High School and 10th Street Middle School. Effective collaboration with the Legacy/10th Street principal will be critical.
Position Goal:
The primary responsibility of the principal is the daily improvement of classroom instruction that results in high levels of student academic performance for all students. The principal is responsible for leveraging all aspects of the building instructional program (curriculum materials instructional capacity use of assessment) to ensure all students have an equal opportunity to learn and to do so with a high level of integrity.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Valid Washington State Administrator credential with Principal endorsement
- Valid Washington State Teaching certificate
- Masters degree in educational administration
- Bilingual preferred
- Demonstrated experience (in a previous administrative assignment) developing a strong culture of improved achievement
- Experience in implementing curriculum assessment instruction that improve learning performance
- Prior experience in designing and implementing a secondary school master schedule that supports cross content grade level teaming
- Demonstrated experience in implementing research-based best practices that have increased student achievement and for preparing students for college and/or career readiness
- Successful teaching and instructional leadership experience
- Experience at the high school level preferred
- Experience and/or training with cultural ethnic and language diversity preferred
- Successful Washington State Patrol and Federal Bureau of Investigation Fingerprint Clearance
- Proof of Immunization (if born 1/1/57 or later)
- I-9 Employment Eligibility in compliance with the Immigrations Reform and Control Act
- Completion of all district-required trainings within thirty (30) calendar days from hire date
Desired Skills:
- Ability to assign classrooms and schedule common planning periods to support collaboration and integration of curricular areas
- Uses data to know learners monitor and measure progress establish targets and determine next steps to improve instructional practice and student learning
- Experience in using data to:
- Assign teaching staff based on student need and teacher expertise
- Identify monitor and intervene with students most at risk of failure
- Identify groups of students that are underperforming and to establish specific achievement goalincreases for each group
- Evidence of the ability to provide constructive and/or directive feedback to classroom teachers and thesubsequent monitoring of progress toward the suggested/directed goal that resulted in a change ofbehavior or practice
- Ensure that every student meets or exceeds standards by: creating understanding and a sense of urgency among teachers students and the community and to do what it takes to guarantee success for every student

Evaluation:
This position shall be supervised periodically by the Executive Director of Secondary Schools pursuant to the currently established district procedures and evaluation criteria. The process shall include an evaluation of the employees performance of the above essential job functions.
