POSITION SUMMARY
Under the direction of the Clinical Manager this position will be a member of a multi-disciplinary team delivering comprehensive patient care in a primary care clinical setting. The candidate will work closely with healthcare providers to assist with examinations procedures and treatments ensuring that patients receive the highest standard of care. Additionally the candidate may perform administrative tasks such as maintaining medical records scheduling appointments and coordinating patient referrals. The MA/LPN will engage with patients providing education on medications treatment plans and preventive care to promote overall wellness and patient empowerment in a unique team-based environment.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi reserves the right to change amend add delete and otherwise assign any and all duties responsibilities and positions titles as it deems necessary to meet the needs of the government. The statements below are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by individuals assigned to this position. They are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties responsibilities and skills required of personnel so classified.
  1. Prepares patient for exam and treatment by taking and recording vital signs chief complaint and other necessary measurements. Obtains and reviews medical surgical and social history including medications and allergies.
  2. Performs procedures (in office labs: venipuncture urinalysis pregnancy testing strep screens; EKGs TB testing) and reports results to providers.
  3. Performs point of care CLIA-waived testing and maintains quality control logs.
  4. Prepares and administers medications and injections as directed by the provider.
  5. Accurately documents all patient information in the medical record according to current guidelines.
  6. Communicates information regarding testing procedures and follow up care to patient in a clear concise and professional manner.
  7. Responsible for prioritization of patient flow through clinical process.
  8. Triages patient phone calls assessing condition and brainstorming to create a plan of action that is appropriate for the situation.
  9. Maintains a clean functional environment including cleaning and disinfection of equipment exam rooms and storage areas Ensures compliance with all relevant regulations and guidelines including infection prevention protocols.
  10. Orders supplies and stocks patient care areas. Monitors inventory including medication/injectables (e.g. expired medications/equipment and recalls).
  11. Responsible for administering balancing and ordering immunizations as well as inputting required information into MCIR. In addition maintains the log for freezer and refrigeration units that contain lab tests and vaccinations.
  12. Responsible for adhering to VFC guidelines which may include virtual or offsite training as applicable.
  13. Develops and maintains effective communication mechanism with all external and internal customers. Exemplifies service orientation and the team concept in all contacts.
  14. Provides clerical support with patient/client notifications and documentation to include but not limited to complete medical records including labs authorizations X-Rays hospital records and any previous care pertaining to each patient visit. Provides complete and accurate information necessary for billing related to the patient encounter in a timely fashion.
  15. Maintains a high level of confidentiality and ensures patients rights in accordance with proper procedures and in compliance with HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability Accountability Act).
  16. Participates as applicable in team meetings and provides medical coverage as needed for NHBP events.
  17. Maintains and is responsible to perform duties related to occupational health program if applicable to position location including occupational drug screen collection MRO Assistant duties and/or occupational health immunization administration and program files.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
An applicants education training and experience must be sufficient to demonstrate that the applicant possesses the ability to successfully perform each of the essential functions. The requirements listed below are generally representative of the education experience and skills and/or ability required to enable one to successfully perform the essential functions associated with his position:
  1. High School diploma or GED equivalent.
  2. Completion of a medical assistant certificate licensed practical nursing diploma advanced Emergency Medical Technician (EMT-A) or a Paramedic program from an accredited institution.
    1. MAs- Must be Certified/Registered as a Medical Assistant or able to be Certified/Registered within 6 months of hire.
    2. LPNs - Current and valid licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in the State of Michigan
    3. EMT-A/Paramedics Current and valid licensure as an EMT-A or Paramedic in the State of Michigan.
  3. CPR/BLS certification upon hire or as soon as training is provided.
  4. MRO Assistant certification within 6 months of hire (if position location requires).
  5. Experience with electronic medical records and appointment scheduling/billing system.
  6. Must maintain a valid drivers license with good driving record; GSA certifiable and must be able to travel (with advanced notice) to other locations for scheduled meetings and occasional clinic coverage.
  7. Must be able to successfully complete and pass a comprehensive background investigation and drug screening in accordance with NHBP standards.
  8. Must be able to maintain strict confidentiality and a demonstrated understanding and application of HIPAA.
  9. Must be able to adjust schedule as needed or required.
  10. Must possess excellent communication skills both verbal and written.
  11. Must have proficient computer skills in keyboarding word processing spreadsheets email and internet.
  12. Must always present in a professional demeanor and appearance.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  1. Willingness to develop a comprehensive understanding of Trauma Informed Care and apply to daily functions.
  2. Ability to understand gain knowledge and appreciate the differences with the Native American culture and customs.
  3. Knowledge of medical terminology.
  4. Strong organization and data management skills; ability to maintain both physical and electronic files.
  5. Ability to maintain good working relationships with tribal members co-workers community resources and the general public.
  6. Ability to work cooperatively as part of a multi-disciplinary health care team.
  7. Proven organizational and time management skills; self-starter and self-directed.
  8. Excellent professional judgement discretion and problem-solving skills.
  9. Ability to develop specific goals and plans to prioritize organize and accomplish assigned work.
  10. Ability to work with constant interruptions and adjust schedule as needed or necessary.
PREFERRED
  1. Completion of a Medical Assistant degree program from an accredited institution; or
  2. Completion of a Practical Nursing certificate program and licensed as an LPN.
  3. Minimum one (1) year medical assisting experience or health office experience.
  4. Experience working with Tribal government or Native American institutions.

Tribal preference will be applied in accordance with the NHBP Indian Preference in Employment Code which requires that preference in employment be afforded to NHBP members spouse/parents of NHBP members and Native Americans who meet the minimum qualifications and can successfully perform the essential functions for the position.
