As per G.S. 126-5 this position is designated as Exempt Managerial and is not subject to the State Human Resources Act. This position is subject to the State Government Ethics Act. THE STARTING SALARY FOR THIS POSITION IS LIMITED TO $67996 to $111142. Salary determination is based upon the candidates education and experience related to the position as well as departmental budget and equity considerations.
This position reports into the Criminal Bureau and serves the North Carolina Sheriffs Education and Training Standards Commission (N.C.G.S. 17E-6). The Director is accountable for program implementation and success. This position will be responsible for managing and providing strategic oversight as the Program Administrator for the Commission. In this capacity the Director is responsible for the development planning implementation administration and enforcement of existing and new programs of the Commission the management and oversight of grants Human Resource Administration and completion of special projects assigned by the Attorney General Chief of Staff Commission or Criminal Bureau.
The Sheriffs Standards Division oversees the commission-mandated detention officer and telecommunicator certification courses. This includes the regulation of community colleges the North Carolina Justice Academy and local agencies delivery of commission-mandated course offerings. Instructors facilitating commission-mandated courses are also subject to regulation and certification by the Division. The Division also administers a professional certificate and service award program to recognize justice officers for their experience training and service in law enforcement and detention.
In this capacity the Director will oversee the regulation of all North Carolina sheriffs and deputy sheriffs detention officers and telecommunicators. The Directors team will ensure compliance standards for employment training and certification. The Division is responsible for ensuring that the States criminal justice officers are competent and ethical in their duties. The Director and their team will work on behalf of the Commission to provide quality criminal justice services to all the citizens of North Carolina.

The ideal candidate will uphold the Departments values and policies and work seamlessly with their peers within the Departments Criminal Justice Training and Standards Legal Communication and Legislative divisions. This position will manage all division staff and HR-related matters with support and guidance from the H.R. Director. The Director also works with D.O.J.s Financial Services Section to review and monitor the budget of the Division with the backing from D.O.J.s Chief Financial Officer. The Director is ultimately responsible for the quality of work produced and oversight for the supervision and management of the Division staff.

Bachelors degree in criminal justice business or public administration or closely related field from an appropriately accredited institution with six years of progressive experience in the field of criminal justice including two years of supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
