Mission of Unit:
The mission of the school of nursing is to champion health and well-being through the power of nursing education discovery and practice.
Chief Purpose of this position:
The Academic/Student Success Coach facilitates the process of exploring and developing skills behaviors and habits that contribute to success in the nursing program. These include academic goal setting learning and study strategies time management and organization self-regulation and self-efficacy.
This is a restricted position with an end date after one year and continued employment is dependent upon availability of funding.
General duties include:
- Foster the development of students skills behaviors andhabits that contribute to success in nursing college and beyond and helpsstudents to identify and overcome obstacles that impede academic success.
-Help students to identify develop and implement learningstrategies and study skills specific to course materials.
-Create and develop relevant course material for workshopsand other programming for nursing students to help them examine their learningstyles habits of learning and studying information retention and currentdifficulties or barriers to success; Participates in Orientation and othernursing program activities as assigned/appropriate.
-Monitor the progress of students who seek academic coachingservices via check-ins scheduled meetings proactive outreach and regularcommunication.
-Collaborate with the Office of Student Success (OSS) torefer students to appropriate academic personnel and support resources and collaborate with others as necessary to monitor and accelerate the academicprogress of referred students.
-Educate/Inform faculty on issues related to best practicesfor student learning.
-Represent the SON at University meetings as appropriate
- Initiate and maintain relationships with central universityresources to support student learning and performance
-Communicate identified issues to faculty program directorsor associate deans as needed
-Facilitate peer tutoring services for the SON
-Collect input analyze and interpret data as requiredincluding academic testing data
-Collaborate with other Academic Success Coach
Position Responsibilities:
1. Provide support to the pre and post-licensure BS program (45%). P
- Provide academic coaching to nursing students one on one and in groups as appropriate.
-Work with students to examine their learning styles habits of learning and studying information retention and current difficulties or barriers to success.
-Heighten students awareness of requirements for achieving academic success and assist them in discovering new strategies to support learning.
-Foster a supportive relationship and enhance students personal accountability.
2. Work closely with academic advisors BS program director and faculty to support student learning (45%).
- Collaborate and coordinate with OSS and University level services in support of student learning (e.g. DAS tutoring writing).
-Oversee peer tutoring activities in the school.
-Work with academic advisors to refer students to appropriate services when dealing with adverse social determinants of learning (health social economic environmental).
-Educate/Inform faculty on issues related to best practices for student learning
3. Other Duties as assigned (10%)
Minimum Hiring Standards:
- Graduate degree in education counseling nursing psychology or related field; or equivalent training and experience
-Experience working with undergraduate or graduate students
-Knowledge of coaching instructional and mentoring techniques
-Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
-Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
-Ability to learn and utilize assessment platforms
-Demonstrated experience working in and fostering an environment of respect professionalism and civility with a population of faculty staff and students from various backgrounds and experiences or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU
Preferred Hiring Standards:
-One or more years of experience as an academic coachstudent success coach or equivalent
-Healthcare background
-Experience working with students enrolled in healthdiscipline programs
