About the role

Based at our Newstead office the Senior Policy Advisor is responsible for providing support to the Manager Strategic Policy to shape and deliver legislative strategic and policy priorities related to the Heavy Vehicle National Law (HVNL).

Key responsibilities of this role are:

Drive planning coordination and development of policy advice and strategic planning particularly around the HVNL Review and advocating for legislative change.

  • Develop and advocate for national policy and legislative reform and its positioning within the broader National Heavy Vehicle Regulators strategic plan.
  • Manage projects ensuring completion within statutory regulatory and financial obligations.
  • Provide advice to support informed decision-making on a range of legislative strategic and policy matters relevant to the NHVR.
  • Initiate build and maintain networks and effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders and represent the NHVR on committees and working groups as required.
  • Conduct research and analyse complex data issues and trends

As the ideal candidate you will have a depth of experience in a similar position and have high levels of written oral and interpersonal communication skills including the ability to analyse legislation and negotiate desired outcomes with internal and external stakeholders including local state and national levels.

The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) commenced operations in 2013 as the national entity responsible for regulating all vehicles in Australia over 4.5 tonnes gross vehicle mass. The NHVR minimises the compliance burden on the heavy vehicle transport industry reduces duplication and inconsistences across state and territory borders and ultimately for the heavy vehicle business with government in Australia.

We are headquartered in Brisbane and employ more than 1000 people across the ACT New South Wales Queensland South Australia Tasmania and Victoria.
