About the Library

In alignment with the ambitious vision and core aspirations of Transformation 2030 the University of Ottawa Library advances cutting edge research and supports transformative learning by connecting the uOttawa community to expertise services collections and technology in a welcoming and supportive environment.

The University of Ottawa Library is composed of 3 main libraries - the Morisset Library (Arts and Science) the Brian Dickson Law Library and the Health Sciences Library - in addition to a number of specialized research collections. It has approximately 150 employees including 55 librarians serving the students faculty and employees of the University.

Positionpurpose:

This Specialist Scholarly Communication plays a key part in advancing scholarly communication and open science at the University of Ottawa by supporting the organization preservation and sharing of research and teaching outputs. The incumbent assists users with the deposit and publishing of materials ensures materials meet institutional requirements related to metadata copyright and open access policy. The incumbent supports the onboarding and management of scholarly journals promotes and enables the use of digital identifiers and helps create resources such as guides and tutorials to improve the user with relevant Library services. The incumbent contributes to the development of internal workflows participates in data collection and reporting and collaborates with colleagues and campus partners to improve services and align with evolving academic and research activities.

In this role your responsibilities will include:

  • Curation and publishing services: Takes a user-centered approach to assist students faculty and staff in the preparation and deposit of research and teaching materials created by the uOttawa community and our partners as a means of providing open permanent access to uOttawa scholarship ensuring wide dissemination and increased visibility. Tracks curation workflows using relevant tools as appropriate. Contributes to the management and processing of new journal agreements and onboarding of new journals to the Open Journal Systems (OJS) platform. Responds to inquiries received through designated shared email inboxes managed by the Scholarly Communication and Data department.

  • Deposit compliance and quality assurance: Reviews and assesses researcher student and staff research and teaching materials to verify adherence to metadata standards and copyright policies for works deposited in uO Research via DSpace and for library-hosted journals on OJS. Identifies potential copyright risks metadata quality and monitors compliance with institutional national and international standards for works deposited in institutionally supported repository infrastructure (eg. DSpace) and journals hosted on the OJS platform. Notes areas of non-compliance and makes recommendations or refers submission requests or inquiries to relevant specialist colleagues for feedback guidance or verification prior to resubmission. Manages Crossref DOI resolution reports and actions DOI (digital object identifier) issues as needed.

  • Learning tools: Contributes to or leads the development updating or management of tutorials guides documentation websites and other self-learning tools to enable users to effectively navigate and use uO Research Open Journal Systems ORCID IDs DOIs and other platforms and tools used by and in consultation with the Scholarly Communication and Data department as appropriate.

  • Procedure development and awareness raising: Contributes to the development of and applies internal procedures and workflows related to uO Research Open Journal Systems and other platforms used by the Scholarly Communication and Data department as appropriate. Contributes to education and outreach pertaining to the Librarys open access policy open science initiatives and advancing relevant policies (eg. Tri-Agency Open Access Policy on Publications) on campus.

  • Teamwork: Collaborates with colleagues in the Research Services division as well as across the Library to support the institutional repository and library publishing services along with other services offered by the department as needed. Works closely with other members of the department and the Library to contribute to improvements to collections services policies and procedures with a view to continuously adapting to meet changing user needs. May be called upon to participate in the librarys online chat service.

  • Data analysis and communication of results: Contributes to the collection and analysis of data and statistics through appropriate sources and identifies notable patterns and comparisons. Contributes to the gathering and reporting of relevant metrics as required for program evaluation operational decision making and consortial reporting.

  • External liaison: Liaise with key partners on campus (eg. Office of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs uO Press faculties and academic departments etc.) regarding policies and exceptions as well as external partners (eg. rudit Coalition Publica etc.). May participate in local regional or national groups or communities (eg. Canadian Association of Research Libraries Confederation of Open Access Repositories Canadian Research Knowledge Network etc.).

  • Supervision: May supervise work performed by students and casual employees to organize priorities and provide guidance in the attainment of individual objectives. Summarizes analysis in support of service assessment and development.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Graduate degree ideally in a research data-intensive discipline or equivalent professional experience

  • Minimum of 4 years of professional experience including a minimum of 2 years of experience that demonstrate knowledge of repository infrastructure metadata standards and publishing policies

Additional Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of or experience with the academic library environment

  • Knowledge of Indigenous data and information sovereignty and the application of equity diversity inclusion and accessibility principles in the context of scholarly communication and open science

  • Demonstrated ability to exercise judgement when verifying the quality of bibliographic information and data and use computer systems and software for the manipulation and clean-up of data and information

  • Ability to communicate effectively with researchers and students from a variety of disciplines and backgrounds

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently manage multiple projects at once to set priorities meet deadlines and work in teams

  • Familiarity with database or repository structure and development

  • Familiarity with metadata standards to describe both data sets and variables

  • Demonstrated ability to identify and vet resources and tools for data sharing analysis and preservation

  • Attention to detail

  • Ability to problem-solve through independent learning

  • Ability to make public presentations in both official languages

  • Bilingualism French and English (spoken and written)

The rating is determined by a proficiency test designed by the Official Languages and Bilingualism Institute.

Prior to May 1 2022 the University required all students faculty staff and visitors (including contractors) to be fully vaccinated against Covid-19 as defined in Policy 129 Covid-19 Vaccination. This policy was suspended effective May 1 2022 but may be reinstated at any point in the future depending on public health guidelines and the recommendations of experts.
