Position Overview:
NC Child is seeking a dynamic Director to lead the day-to-day operations of Excel NC (Executives Championing Early Learning in North Carolina) a bold new initiative mobilizing North Carolinas business community to champion early childhood education. This initiative brings together CEOs senior executives county commissioners and influential stakeholders to advocate for state-level investment and policy reforms that improve access to high-quality child care and early learning.
The Director will be the primary liaison for all members of Excel NC cultivating relationships with business leaders supporting coalition governance structures and driving strategic engagement to advance Excel NCs mission. The ideal candidate is a strategic thinker with exceptional relationship management skills deep familiarity with North Carolinas business and policy landscape and a strong commitment to improving early childhood outcomes.
Responsibilities:
Coalition Leadership & Stakeholder Engagement
- Serve as the main point of contact for all Excel NC coalition members including CEOs executives and advisory partners.
- Recruit an influential steering committee and a broad base of coalition members from a wide range of industries.
- Build and maintain trusted relationships with key stakeholders across the business nonprofit and governmental sectors.
- Coordinate quarterly Steering Committee meetings and monthly Advisory Team meetings including agenda development speaker recruitment and follow-up communications.
- Ensure meaningful and strategic engagement opportunities for coalition members.
Strategic Planning & Implementation
- Support the Executive Director and Advisory Team in advancing the initiatives strategic goals.
- Design and implement business engagement strategies for coalition members including public speaking opportunities and events and meetings with state and local government officials.
- Collaborate with communications staff to amplify coalition voices and priorities in the media.
- Support the development and passage of local government resolutions around early childhood education.
Event Planning & Strategic Communications
- Work closely with the Special Events Manager to plan and execute Excel NC convenings roundtables and annual gathering.
- Represent Excel NC at regional events local chamber meetings and statewide early childhood education-related convenings.
- Ensure consistent messaging and thought leadership across all external channels and events.
- Identify and expand local engagement opportunities at the intersection of business and early childhood education including with community colleges councils of government workforce development boards etc.

Data & Policy Integration
- Collaborate with NC Child research and policy staff to translate research and economic data into accessible tools for business audiences.
- Help identify and elevate stories and examples from coalition members that illustrate the return on investment in early childhood education.
Qualifications:
- Minimum 5-7 years of experience in coalition management business outreach public policy government relations or a related field.
- Strong understanding of economic development policy in North Carolina.
- Exceptional relationship management and communication skills with senior-level stakeholders.
- Proven ability to lead multi-stakeholder initiatives and navigate diverse political and business interests.
- Experience organizing or facilitating advisory committees working groups or coalitions.
- Comfort with public speaking media appearances and written communications (e.g. op-eds statements).
- Ability to work across internal departments and coordinate staff to advance larger organizational and coalition goals.
- Deep familiarity with the NC business landscape and General Assembly preferred.
Position Requirements:
- NC Child uses a hybrid work model. This person will be required to work in person at the NC Child office in Raleigh 2 days each week.
- This person will occasionally need to travel around and outside of the state. They will be reimbursed for all mileage traveled to project sites at the standard IRS rate for business purposes.
- NC Child requires staff to be vaccinated against COVID-19.
Compensation & Benefits:
