Job Description

REPORTS TO: Site Administrator

SALARY SCHEDULE: 260/R7

WORK YEAR: 10 Months

WORK SCHEDULE:8:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.

DEFINITION:

Under immediate supervision assists in conducting intensified positive learning experiences for non-English and limited-English speaking students; assigned to a classroom having a Bilingual setting parent authorization and two-way instruction that has been authorized by the District; performs a variety of clerical and supportive tasks for certified instructional personnel including translating written materials; and performs related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

Positions in this class receive direct assignment supervision and training from certified instructional personnel and general orientation and training from the principal through District programs. Special qualifications required for working with the needs and interests of non-English speaking students.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

  • Assists the teacher in translation of material from English to the designated language need
  • Works with students having difficulty with English in order to develop confidence in their communication efforts
  • Provides an extension of the teachers assistance to students having learning difficulties
  • Assists teacher with parent contacts and weekly lesson plans
  • May interpret for parent conferences or other school level meetings
  • May assist in registering designated language speaking students for school
  • Assists in administering tests for language dominance
  • Oversees and supervises students during classroom activities in library and on field trips
  • Maintains discipline in the absence of the teacher
  • Maintains records of materials and equipment as directed
  • Assists in analyzing demonstrating and explaining basic skills knowledge and strategies in formal sports and fundamentals of body movement translating from English to the designated language when needed
  • Maintains a safe and appropriate learning environment

QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge of: Written and oral designated language; Subject areas reading math written and/or oral language and other areas needed for specific jobs; The needs and interests of non-English-speaking students;

Ability to: Read write and speak the designated language and English fluently; Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with student parents and staff; Understand oral and written instructions; Learn quickly methods used in controlling and motivating children; Perform routine clerical work and basic arithmetical calculations;

Demonstrate an understanding patient warm and receptive attitude toward children.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade; some paid or volunteer experience working with children in an educational or child care setting; or any combination of training and experience that could likely provide the desired knowledge and abilities.

REQUIREMENTS:

Pass the Districts adopted Bilingual Examination with a satisfactory score; Good physical condition as determined by pre- and post-employment inquiries and health report; Pass District physical examination which includes drug screening; Provide proof of negative TB test at time of hiring.
