Job Description

Job Title: Aboriginal Practitioner / Family Support Worker

Location: Canberra Australian Capital Territory 2601 Australia

Role Type: Full-time

Experience Level: Varied

The organisation:

Capability Support is a provider of services to people living in the community. Capability was founded on the premise that we can do better for people living with disability children youth and families in the community by providing flexible personalised high quality and professional supports.

Capability provides Therapeutic Contact and Transport Early Intervention Supports Alternate Care / Residential Type Therapeutic Supports and Respite to Children and Young People with varied needs including some with behaviours that present as complex. We are recruiting an Aboriginal Practitioner who will also work as a Family Support Worker.

The role:

Capability Support currently provides services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families in situations where Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations (ACCOs) are not available at the time. We work in partnership with community seeking guidance and respecting cultural knowledge and we refer to other community-based organisations where appropriate to ensure the best support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people.

As a part of our Strategic Plan 2024-2027 we have identified a key pillar of Cultural Safety Actively embracing a diversity of views to lead the way in cultural safety and inclusive support

We are looking for an experienced and passionate Aboriginal Practitioner / Youth Worker who is adaptable flexible experienced and dedicated to creating real change in the lives of Children and Young People that we support.

The role is advertised as a full time (38 hour per week) role with two days in office and three days in the field. This is open to negotiation for the right candidate.

The successful applicant will receive a comprehensive onboarding from the Capability Family Support Services Management team as well as complete a robust training course to ensure you are best equipped to deliver the role. You will be provided with cultural and operational supervision.

The responsibilities:

  • Support Children and Young People in a therapeutic trauma-informed approach.
  • Supporting Children and Young People through crisis situations and trauma-related behaviours.
  • Advise Capability on implementation of best-practice advice such as existing Cultural Reviews
  • Access develop and implement training on Cultural Safety for all Capability Staff Members
  • Advise Capability Service Managers Practice Lead and Quality Team on best practice supports for individual Children and Young People supported by Capability
  • Make connections and consult with local Aboriginal Community to seek best practice input on individual Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children and Young People supported by Capability
  • Consider and explore the development and where appropriate implement a Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) to support ongoing commitment to reconciliation and cultural respect.
  • Prepare Capability Human Resources and Training to accommodate for further Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander identified recruitment.
  • Demonstrate and model high ethics and standards following all Capability policies procedures and values.

The requirements:

  • Strong cultural connections and the ability to be professionally curious
  • Prior experience supporting clients from backgrounds of trauma or complex behaviours.
  • High-level problem-solving skills with the ability to think respond quickly and appropriately to situations.
  • Excellent literacy and writing skills
  • Working with Vulnerable People Card (Or ability to obtain one)
  • Working with Childrens Check NSW (Or ability to obtain one)
  • CYPS Suitability Clearance (or ability to obtain one)
  • Valid police check (or willingness to undertake one)
  • Valid Australian Drivers License
  • Appropriate Working Rights in Australia
  • Current First Aid & CPR Qualifications (or ability to obtain)
  • Reliable Comprehensively Insured Motor Vehicle
