G10: 43693 to 48710 pay award pending

We require an experienced Environmental Protection Officer who is conversant with and has experience in all present aspects of UK local authority environmental protection regulatory work preferably gained within an urban and industrial area.

Reporting to a Principal Environmental Protection Officer the position includes regulatory duties provision of technical consultation responses and supporting colleagues in Environmental Protection and other teams as required.

If you would like to join a bespoke competent team of officers handling a demanding range of environmental protection issues that are focussed primarily on industrial matters then we would like to hear from you. We are particularly interested in persons having strong skill sets and abilities regarding air quality and/or acoustic modelling applications of GIS software land contamination and environmental permitting.

The Environmental Protection team essentially deals with industrial pollution matters along with some commercial aspects including appraisals of planning development.

Good technical written interpersonal and presentational skills are a necessity.

The Role

The Environmental Protection team is committed to delivering a proficient service and values high technical competency. The compliment of staff comprises professional officers that conduct duties based on environmental regulation and safeguarding the public; ground contamination; air quality/air pollution; acoustics/noise; appraisal of impacts concerning planning development; and complaint responses.

We are looking for a person who is conversant in undertaking all relevant regulatory duties as directed and is capable of operating both autonomously and collaboratively with partners and stakeholders.

Post holders will be required to undertake a specialist role supporting a Principal Environmental Protection Officer for example in either: air quality; acoustics noise and vibration; ground contamination; industrial regulation (IPPC) or town planning.

The Ideal Candidate

A competent performer at all levels with industrial and commercial experience in UK local authority environmental protection work which has included dealing with:

  • air pollution/air quality
  • acoustics noise and vibration
  • ground contamination
  • statutory nuisances
  • preparation of detailed consultation responses in regard to planning applications and Building Regulations for environmental protection purposes
  • IPPC and LAAPC (A2 and Part B installations)
  • environmental information requests
  • dealing with members of the public local politicians businesses and other internal and external professionals
  • working under pressure and meeting deadlines
  • providing clear advice and recommendations in a tactful manner to specialist and non-specialist persons
  • modern IT and software

A good working knowledge and current experience of UK environmental protection legislation and its application along with key environmental protection themes is essential as is an ability to adapt and as may be needed to lead on work projects and initiatives.

Working Arrangements

Walsall Council is committed to a blended working approach providing flexibility between office and home-based working that meets the diverse needs of staff the service and our will require office working on up to three days per week (normally Tuesday to Thursday) site work and working from home.

This is a full time position and can periodically involve working outside normal weekday hours attending committees and representing the service.

Qualifications:

Degree or Diploma in Environmental Health; OR a degree in an environmental science subject or equivalent qualification(s); plus an additional specialist qualification in or related to environmental pollution; acoustics/noise/vibration; air pollution; or land/ground contamination.
