The Students Union is the focal point of campus life and we have exciting opportunities for University of Warwick students to join our team!
Whats on offer:
Hourly Rate:12.71 plus holiday pay calculated at 15.55% (equivalent of 35 days paid leave per year)
Duration:Fixed Term Contract starting in Term 3 2025 and until 4 July 2026 (subject to a 6-month probationary period) working throughout the next academic year (2025/2026).
Hours:You will be expected to work an average of 2 shifts a week (an average of 10-12 hours a week) throughout term time; you must be available to work 8 out of the 10 Wednesday nights (shifts usually 18:30-02:15) throughout term 1 and term 2 and then usually a Friday or Saturday night (shifts usually 21:30-02:15). We cannot guarantee these hours.
Location:Warwick Students Union Coventry.

Whats the role
You will be working in The Copper Rooms which is our dedicated venue that delivers a range of exciting events club nights and live music throughout the academic year.
You will be leading the team of Stewards to ensure that Health & Safety requirements are met at all times and to assist in the safe provision of service outlets to operate the door entry and cloakroom systems and to act as information points for members and guests providing a customer friendly professional face of the Students Union.
Who are you
We are looking for someone with excellent customer service skills who is able to demonstrate initiative and good verbal communication whilst overseeing the Stewarding Team to ensure the safe operation of our venues during our highly successful events programme.

JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB TITLE:Head Steward
RESPONSIBLE TO:Venue and Security Manager and through them to Deputy Venue Manager Food & Beverage Manager Operations Director Chief Executive and the Board of Trustees.
RESPONSIBLE FOR:Stewards
MAIN PURPOSE FOR JOB:To lead a successful stewarding team in the Entertainment department. Working closely with Door Supervisors First Aiders Stewards and Management to run an efficient stewarding shift.
To ensure Health and Safety requirements are met at all times to assist in the safe provision of service outlets.
MAIN DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES
- To organise allocated staff on shift and monitor staff appearance
- To ensure staff know the responsibilities they have for the evening
- To help and attend to customers in a friendly and helpful manner according to organisational policy on customer care
- Allocate and monitor staff breaks and time sheets
- To train & coach stewards
- To ensure venue is safe secure and at an appropriate level of tidiness throughout an event
- Responsible for co-ordinating change for tills and correct till procedures are followed.
- To support the Licensee in the upholding of the Premises licence and his/her Personal licence. To ensure that their role is clearly understood particularly their liability and responsibility
- To ensure that all uniform and equipment is used appropriately and returned at the end of shift
- To liaise with Bars team leaders to arrange travel home for stewards and bar staff.
- To operate all machinery and equipment in a correct and safe manner and ensure that the stewards do the same. To use equipment for its designed purpose and according to organisational policy on Health and Safety
- To abide by current legislation concerning health safety and fire.
- To comply with the Unions evacuation procedure and any other relevant policies
- Monitor and evaluate steward performance for feedback to management while maintaining strict confidentiality
- Any other duties in line with the job description that may from time to time reasonably be required by the organisation
- To commit to reducing the SUs environmental impact and promote environmental and ethical good practice. To be carried out on line with the Students Union Environmental policy.
- The above duties to be carried out with due regard to the Organisations policy on Health and Safety Customer Care and Equal Opportunities in accordance with legislative requirements
EXPECTED STANDARDS
- To deal with customers in a friendly and helpful manner according to organisational policy on customer care
- To ensure staff are well presented for their shift in uniform. To follow health and safety regulations at all times.

- To be knowledgeable about events and give guidance where appropriate
- Timetable any staff breaks and sign off time sheets at the end of each night
- Ensure stewards are suitably trained & monitor their performance offering help & guidance when necessary
- To do regular checks on the safety of the building specifically that fire exits are functioning and that fire lanes are clear
- Ensure that staff are aware of and use the correct till procedures at all times.
- To count in radios and other equipment at the end of the night and ensure that it is replaced in its appropriate place
- Ensure that the correct procedure for booking and collecting money for taxis is followed and that we are as economical as possible in order to keep costs low
- To follow and ensure others follow manual handling procedures
- Use appropriate protective clothing or equipment
- Maintain operational records & any other due diligence documentation taking preventative & corrective action when necessary. Ensure stewards adhere to laid down standards.
