Job Description

St. Margaret Church located in Bel Air MD seeks candidates for a Director of Music & Liturgy. In collaboration with and under the leadership of the Pastor the Director of Music & Liturgy (DML) works for the glory of God and the sanctification of the faithful. The DML achieves this work through sacred music as well as robust and detailed liturgical programming toward this end. This full-time position is responsible for developing and maintaining a comprehensive program of sacred music for the Parish that assists the people of God in praying and for supporting the Pastor in the liturgical life of the Parish. This position reports directly to the Pastor and collaborates with other members of the parish staff and school faculty. This position is considered to be ministerial in nature. Church personnel in ministerial positions must teach preach counsel uphold and provide vision in accord with Roman Catholic Church doctrinal moral and spiritual tradition.

Essential Functions

  • Oversee planning of sacred liturgies in collaboration with the Pastor in particular weekend Masses Holy Day Masses Solemnities and other special liturgies.
  • Select and/or coordinate music for Saturday 4:00 Vigil Mass and Sunday Masses at 8:00 9:00 10:00 11:00 and 12:00.
  • Participate in planning and coordinating music for all funerals and weddings. Coordinate with outside musicians for these liturgies when required.
  • Recruit develop and schedule liturgical ministers in roles of cantor choir member and instrumentalist.
  • Work collaboratively with parish staff and volunteers to ensure that all liturgical music is carefully planned well-prepared and well-performed.
  • Serve as the Director of the St. Margaret Adult Choir. Conduct rehearsals and direct the choir at least one Mass per weekend.
  • Serve as the main organist for all liturgies at the main campus regularly at 8:00 10:00 12:00 and two 4:00 p.m. Vigil Masses per month.
  • Arrange for substitute/supplemental musicians (brass strings etc.) for special liturgies throughout the year.
  • Provide vision and leadership for the St. Margaret Fine Arts Program
  • Coordinate maintenance of parish musical instruments - tuning and maintenance of the organs and pianos
  • Maintain and oversee budgets and expenditures relating to music and the arts.

Position Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in music or related field strongly preferred.
  • Must be proficient in organ piano choral conducting and vocal coaching.
  • Minimum 3 years prior experience as a liturgical musician or director of liturgical music preferably in a Catholic parish.
  • Strong working knowledge of the treasury of sacred music particularly within Catholic Church tradition; ability to integrate appropriate sacred music into each liturgical season and celebration.
  • Practicing Catholic preferred.
  • Working knowledge of Catholic liturgical rites including Sacramental celebrations and the liturgical documents of the Catholic Church particularly as they relate to sacred music.
  • Strong organizational pastoral interpersonal and collaborative skills.
  • Ability to supervise and counsel volunteers and paid members of the music ministry. Coordinate music staff and volunteers.
  • Recruit train and coordinate professional section leaders for the St. Margaret Choir.
  • Coordinate directors and other musicians of the parish including the Assistant Director of Music Assistant Organist Contemporary Music Leader Cantors and Section Leaders.
  • Coordinate payroll for all music staff.
  • Participate with Pastor in evaluation of all music staff.

Range: $50000 $63000 Annualized

Base salary compensation will be determined based on factors such as geographic location skills education experience for this role and/or internal equity of our current employees as part of any final offer. Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus which is determined upon company and individual performance.
