Job Description

Middle School Work-Based Learning Program Support Staff - Internal Applicants Only (Summer WBL Experience) Salem Public Schools Salem MA (4)

Program Dates: July 14 - July 24 2025 (Monday - Friday)

Program Hours: 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM Daily

Location: Salem YMCA Salem MA

Program Overview:

The Salem Public Schools in partnership with the YMCA is thrilled to offer an immersive Summer Work-Based Learning (WBL) Experience program specifically designed for rising 8th graders. This program running for two weeks aims to develop essential job readiness skills and provide students with valuable exposure to various career fields. Building on the highly positive feedback from our Expanding Horizons students who consistently describe our programs as fun supportive and engaging we will continue to foster creative conversations and collaborative projects that resonate deeply with participants. Students will engage in hands-on activities and interactive learning experiences in small groups (4-5 students) all focused on developing applicable real-world skills.

Job Summary:

The Middle School Work-Based Learning Program Support Staff will play a crucial role in empowering a small group of rising 8th graders throughout the program. Responsibilities include providing social-emotional support mitigating conflict assisting with content management ensuring daily attendance and maintaining consistent communication with families. Were seeking individuals with a passion for working with middle school students a commitment to promoting their success and proven experience in fostering positive engaging learning environments.

Responsibilities:

  • Student Support:
    • Provide social and emotional support to a group of 4-5 middle school students.
    • Assist students with content management and ensure their active participation in program activities.
    • Foster a positive inclusive and fun learning environment building on the feedback that students enjoy meeting new people and appreciate kind supportive staff.
    • Monitor student behaviors and help resolve conflicts effectively.

  • Attendance and Communication:
    • Ensure daily attendance of assigned students.
    • Follow up with families regarding daily attendance program highlights and any challenges encountered.
    • Maintain clear and consistent communication with program coordinators and YMCA staff.

  • Program Participation:
    • Attend a mandatory program staff meeting (date TBD typically the week before program start) to review program details and student profiles.
    • Actively participate in all program activities including field trips and guest speaker sessions and adhere to program guidelines.
    • Support the overall program structure and goals helping to deliver the meaningful hands-on enrichment experiences students value.

Qualifications:

  • Experience working with middle school students (rising 8th graders specifically is a plus).
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with an ability to build rapport quickly.
  • Ability to provide comprehensive social and emotional support to students.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Reliable and punctual with a commitment to consistent attendance.
  • Ability to maintain professional communication with families.
  • Ability to pass a background check.

Additional Information:

  • This is a temporary position for the duration of the Summer Work-Based Learning Experience program.
  • Program staff will meet daily at the Salem YMCA.
  • Comprehensive training and ongoing support will be provided prior to and during the program.

Compensation: $2000 for the 2-week program.
