The North Carolina Zoo is seeking a self-motivated and team-orientedEnvironmental Services Team Lead to assist the Environmental Services Housekeeping Supervisors in planning directing coordinating and supervising all aspects of custodial operations within the zoo. This includes custodial services requested by the NC Zoo Society and special event coordinators. The position is responsible for operations (equipment and staffing) adhering to safety standards equipment maintenance standards Guest engagement and ensuring all work is done on schedule. This position is responsible for providing timely accurate friendly efficient and effective housekeeping services to the Zoos 1M Guests per year as well as to Guests invited to special events and/or affairs at the Zoo.

The Environmental Services Branch supports DNCR and the zoo by providing professional housekeeping services for the zoos buildings exhibits building grounds plazas trails parking lots and special events as well as managing the zoos composting programs that contribute to a safe sanitary and Green zoo environment for visitors and staff.

Staff in this branch are charged to provide housekeeping services Guest relations and service recovery in a manner consistent with the environment of the zoo as a tourism destination and accredited institution. Branch operations are an integral part of the zoos strategic and operational planning.


Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:


  • Oversees custodial staff deployment as requested ensures compliance with safety and maintenance standards and provides supervision during weekends holidays and events to maintain a clean and efficient zoo environment.
  • Acts as a Guest service contact by addressing inquiries and complaints providing visitor information and ensuring a positive Guest experience through cleanliness and efficient service recovery.
  • Supports staff training on custodial procedures equipment usage safety protocols and sustainability initiatives while maintaining accurate training documentation.
  • Assists with record-keeping facility and equipment maintenance oversight sustainability initiatives and ensuring compliance with operational and safety standards.
  • Performs custodial tasks as needed assists with emergency response and accident investigations collaborates with other departments and contributes to the overall operational excellence of the Zoo.


Position/Physical Requirements:

Weekly schedule for position: Rotating 4 days 10-hour shifts Thursday Sunday including special events and holidays.

  • Must meet DNCR Fleet Safety Guidelines and have ability to obtain and maintain a valid drivers license issued from within the United States or be able to obtain one within 90 days of employment.
  • Position is required to participate in the Zoos occupational health program.
  • This position requires frequent physical activities including climbing balancing stooping kneeling crouching reaching standing walking pushing pulling lifting fingering grasping feeling talking hearing and repetitive motions.
  • Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Work is performed both indoors and outdoors and may involve exposure to hazards atmospheric conditions oils infectious diseases and bloodborne pathogens.
  • Ability to read/write and interpret prepared text in the English language.
