Description of Job

Colorado Correctional Industries (CCi) is responsible for programs manufacturing goods and providing services to thousands of government and/or non-profit customers in Colorado. Business is operated in the manufacturing and service related fields.

Colorado Correctional Industries (CCi) is a cash funded self supporting division of the Colorado Department of Corrections. This position may be eliminated at any time if funding is discontinued. The Department may be able to assist with transferring you to a position that is either comparable or below the classification that you were hired for but if there is not a vacant position it may result in termination of employment. If the position is eliminated it may require you to relocate to another correctional facility or geographical location based on the need of the CDOC. Also you must meet minimum qualifications for any vacant positions in order to be considered for a transfer. CCi provides services to many government and non profit organizations with an emphasis on excellent customer service.

This Correctional Support Trades Supervisor (CSTS II) is a supervisor at the Print Shop in Denver; position supervises the day to day operations and production work flow; ensures safety and security and supervises inmate work crews. Ensures comprehensive training for inmates in all aspects of these fields in preparation for community reentry. Promotes the CDOC Mission Vision and Values while ensuring safe compliant and efficient operations.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Supervises Print Shop operations within DOC requirements available resources and program objectives;
  • Maintaining safety and security of facility and work sites;
  • Providing supervision of assigned staff promoting a high level of performance by setting a cooperative team oriented work standard;
  • Training and instructing staff and inmates in the appropriate use of relevant tools equipment and procedures;
  • Ensuring timely organized and systematiccompletion of work orders and projects;
  • Ensuring safe secure compliant and cost effective operations;
  • Monitoring and maintaining inventory documentation and reporting;
  • Participating in hiring process;
  • Effectively utilizing the Performance Management Program (PMP) for assigned staff.
  • Coaching and mentoring staff regarding agency supervision encouraging a cohesive team career development and completion of mandatory training;
  • Tracking and approvingtime for assigned staffcompleting mandatory payroll documentation creating schedulesandassigning tasks;
  • Resolving conflict and informal grievances at the lowest level possible;
  • If necessary physically controlling inmates with the proper use of restraints or use of force techniques.
  • Perform other job related duties as assigned or required.

Substitutions:
Completion of formal education at an accredited non-correspondence trade/vocational school college or university that resulted in demonstrated competencies equivalent to those gained through the required experience may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis for up to two (2) years of the required experience..If you are using education as a substitution you must attach transcripts showing the degree and date awarded.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to effectivelyrespond toemergency situations (such as fights fires medical emergencies and escapes);
  • Ability to read and comprehend the English language;
  • Ability to effectively communicate fluently in English both verbally and in writing.
Preferred Qualifications:
  1. Two (2) years of supervision experience. Supervision is exercising span and control over subordinate staff to include coaching mentoring daily monitoring performance management (planning reviewing and evaluating) resolving complaints/grievances at the informal level responsibility for scheduling and leave approval and providing input that could affect pay status or tenure;
  2. Experience working in a correctional environment;
  3. Experience providing work lead or supervisory duties in a correctional Print program.

  • Successfully pass all modules of the Colorado Department of Corrections Basic Training to includeEnglish reading comprehension relevant competency assessments and written/practical exams in Defensive Tactics;

  • Possess the physical ability to successfully complete Defensive Tactics;

    • Lift arms above head and kick as high as own waist;

    • Stabilize another person to accomplish a controlled take down;

    • Use arms palms of hands shins and feet to deliver blows;

    • Withstand impact (slow speed or with a safety bag) on own body from strikes/blows;

    • Swing a baton in a striking technique;

    • Rotate body 90 degrees with feet planted for striking with foot or using a defensive tactic;

    • Get down on one or both knees and up again with multiple repetitions;

  • Will be exposed to Oleoresin Capsicum during Basic Training and will be exposed while on assignment;

  • Must be able to see and hear in order to observe address and respond to potential breaches in safety and security;

  • Seize hold control or subdue violent or assaultive persons and defend oneself or others to prevent injury;

  • Demonstrate body agility strength of all four limbs and the ability to walk and climb stairs consistently;

  • Work in situations involving assaultive behavior physical control of another person and/or restraint situations;

  • Deal with individuals with a range of moods and behaviors utilizing tactfulness and a congenial personable manner;

  • Work with people of the opposite sex diverse racial ethnic groups mentally ill and emotionally disturbed offenders;

  • Communicate by talking listening and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information assignments;

  • Work in an environment with fluctuating noise and temperature (hot and cold) which may include working outdoors in inclement weather and/or concrete floor/wall work settings;

  • Willing and able to travel;

  • Willing and able to work various shifts days afternoons graveyards (nights) which includes a rotating shift schedule;

  • TB (tuberculosis) screening is required of all new employees upon hire;

    The CDOC is committed to a work environment free from illegal drugs and alcohol.
