Classification: Full Time Management Exempt

Salary Range: Grade K ($105932.55 - $124626.52 benefits)

Qualifications:

Education:
  • Undergraduate university degree
  • Master of Library/Information or other related masters degree preferred
  • 2-3 years of demonstrated continuing professional development in the outreach accessibility and inclusion scope

Experience:
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in positions of increasing responsibility in libraries or similar public or community service settings in one or more of the following areas: equity and inclusion accessibility outreach community engagement
  • Minimum 2 years of experience supervising staff

Overall Purpose:
This position exists to ensure Burlington Public Library (BPL) is representative of and welcoming to everyone in the community. Responsibilities include strengthening connections with community organizations and equity seeking groups reducing barriers to access Library resources and support services fostering inclusive values and practices in BPL staff and guiding planning and policy decisions to embed universal design in all Library services and spaces.

Key Accountabilities:
  • Information Burlington service:
    • Lead and optimize Information Burlington information and referral service
    • Oversee BPLs in Halton Information Providers partnership and Halton Community Services Directory
  • Community outreach:
    • Represent Burlington Public Library at community working groups and advisory tables that foster equity and accessibility
    • Oversee and implement community outreach strategy to connect with equity seeking groups (including newcomers Indigenous community members youth racialized groups and people with disabilities)
  • Accessibility:
    • Coordinate and implement BPLs Multi- Year Accessibility Plan ensuring compliance with legislative and regulatory requirements
    • Advise on service and space planning to embed universal design principles
    • Oversee support for customer accommodation and accessibility needs
  • Support Service Collaborations:
    • Develop and coordinate community collaborations to improve awareness of and access to human support services in Library spaces
  • Staff education:
    • Develop and implement system-wide training standards to enhance organizational capacity for equity inclusion and accessibility
  • Policy and procedure oversight:
    • Advise on system-wide policy and procedure development to align with legislation and best practices for accessibility equity and inclusion
  • Participate on and/or lead teams committees or special projects as required.
  • Comply with BPL policies and processes as well as applicable legislation.
  • Perform additional position-related accountabilities assigned by Management.

Key Business Relationships
Internal: Staff at the Library; CEO Senior Leadership Team Managers Staff Members; Library Board.
External: This position will regularly work with customers partners community organizations vendors suppliers and other external consultants.

Scope:
Budget: Oversight for grant funded projects. Purchasing authority up to $5000.
Direct and indirect Reports: 2 full-time (Information Burlington Coordinator and Customer and Outreach Associate). Staff budget of approximately $130000.

  • Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize multiple projects with multiple stakeholders in a dynamic and complex environment

Technical:
  • Act and make recommendations in accordance with BPLs vision mission values and strategic plan
  • Know and apply policies processes procedures and systems within BPL
  • Knowledge and understanding of best practices and principles of diversity equity and inclusion accessibility intersectionality anti-racism and anti-oppression including familiarity with key concepts (i.e. cultural competence unconscious bias trauma-informed care universal design etc.)
  • Demonstrated experience in supporting transformational change through project and change management
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Software

Work Environment
  • Professional office environment at Burlington Public Library
  • Regular participation in off-site meetings and events with community collaborators
  • Some work is completed in public spaces of library branches with customers nearby
  • Little exposure to noise dirt or external elements
  • Occasional physical work including moving changing and setting up for programs or community spaces; shelving shifting packing and unpacking boxes
  • Mid to high computer use and frequent contact by email MS Teams and phone
  • Travel between BPL branches is required mileage is paid

Working Hours
  • BPL is open seven days a week work hours are generally 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with evening and weekend shifts required to attend community meetings and events
  • Additional hours and/or schedule flexibility may be required due to business or operational requirements

Physical Effort
  • Routine physical activity such as periodic standing walking sitting and using basic motor skills
  • Can sit at a computer and use a telephone for extended periods
  • Can stand for extended periods

Mental Effort
  • Able to be positive professional and diplomatic at all times
  • High degree of concentration and looking at a computer screen for hours each day
  • Moderate stress for tight timelines competing priorities and people/relationship management
  • Can provide high-quality service and work with many people at the same time
  • Performing complex strategic thinking and tasks
  • Constant attention to detail reading documentation and analysis of information
