Position Summary

The College of Arts & Humanities at Houston Christian University invites applications for a fulltime leadership and faculty position in the Department of Philosophy History Law & Society. We are seeking a dynamic and mission-aligned legal scholar to serve as both professor and coordinator of our Legal Studies program.

The successful candidate will be responsible for guiding Legal Studies majors and other pre-law students across campus through intentional academic advising mentoring and strategic program development. In addition to coordinating the Legal Studies curriculum the candidate will serve as a faculty affiliate of the Morris Family Center for Law & Liberty whose mission is to educate students in the principles of liberty constitutionalism and free enterprise. This role will involve participation in the Centers public programming student initiatives and interdisciplinary outreach efforts. This is a unique opportunity to influence the next generation of legal thinkers within a Christian liberal arts frameworkcombining rigorous academics institutional leadership and civic-minded service.

This position includes responsibilities in teaching research or scholarly activity and service to the University and broader community. A demonstrated commitment to academic excellence classical liberal arts education and student formation is essential.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Lead the development and delivery of an outstanding Pre-Law program which prepares students for admission to professional schools (law school) or graduate schools
  • Coordinate the curriculum instruction and assessment of the B.A. in Legal Studies
  • Recruit advise and support students in the Legal Studies major and support students in other majors
  • Conduct relevant research scholarship and creative activity which promotes HCUs focus on Law and Liberty and the preservation of founding constitutional principles.
  • Utilize a course syllabus for each course and follow established departmental and institutional guidelines.
  • Evaluate students by established means to measure their progress in achieving course objectives and to inform them in a timely manner of their progress.
  • Identify and assess appropriate student learning outcomes.
  • Participate in university committees.
  • Maintain office hours.
  • Work collaboratively and productively with students and colleagues.
  • Participate in traditional academic functions and institutional and professional service.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Terminal degree in law (Juris Doctor or Doctor of Jurisprudence) required
  • Member in good standing of any state bar preferred
  • Significant teaching practice and academic administrative experience
  • Demonstrated engagement with one or more of the following areas: Constitutional Law

Criminal Law U.S. Legal History American Political Thought Jurisprudence Law and Religion Criminal Justice or Political Philosophy

  • Proficiency in instructional technology including online and hybrid delivery methods
  • Ability to teach both day and evening courses as needed
