Job Description
Description of Work
The Geotechnical Engineering Unit collects and analyzes subsurface information and provides geotechnical engineering designs and recommendations for roadways and structures. For more information see the Geotechnical Engineering Unit Overview and Video.
The Geotechnical Engineering Unit is looking for a Geotechnical Contracts Engineer in our Century Center Office.
In this role you will:
- Manage and coordinate consultant work by preparing and reviewing requests for proposals cost estimates and consultant proposals.
- Visit sites as necessary for meetings or to observe conditions and inspect consultant work.
- Review geotechnical deliverables for adherence to contract NCDOT GEU manuals and other applicable standards.
- Conduct reviews of consultant invoices to determine direct units hours and monetary adherence to Department policies.
- Provide review of encroachment details and shoring recommendations to minimize damage to NCDOT facilities.
- Review consultant and contractor prequalification submittals to determine if they meet or exceed the applicable requirements.
Occasional overnight travel may be required of this position. Applicant must be able to legally operate a state-owned vehicle to visit sites.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities / Competencies
Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:
- Knowledge and understanding of geotechnical engineering and geology as they apply to highway design and construction.
- Knowledge of contracts for engineering and construction.
- Experience interpreting policy and procedure documents to ensure they are followed in your own work or in work by others.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate orally and in writing clearly concisely and in an organized manner to convey technical concepts to a variety of audiences.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelors degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution and three (3) years of progressively responsible experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
