The Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Minnesota invites applications for an instructor position beginning Fall 2025. The position is teaching- focused including classroom and lab instruction.
This is a 12-month annually renewable position beginning 2025 through 2028 with the possibility for extension. Successful applicants will have:
a strong commitment to undergraduate biomedical engineering education and to developing innovative high-quality curricular materials and instructional initiatives
familiarity and sufficient background to teach topics that will cover 85% of our department curriculum
ability to teach 5-6 of our 3-credit courses per academic year
Courses will be determined in consultation with department leadership. The appointee will build on the curriculum developed by primary BME faculty members and will work to further develop instructional activities and inclusive teaching practices. Appointees will be encouraged to initiate and coordinate student academic success programs to support the departments equity and diversity goals. The appointee will also have responsibilities for department and university service.
Successful candidates will be provided clear guidelines toward promotion annual reviews a mentoring committee capacity for professional development and eligibility for teaching awards.
Develop and teach courses applying modern pedagogies and inclusive teaching strategies for a diverse student population
Coordinate course content through collaboration with department colleagues and the Center for Educational Innovation
Develop laboratory manuals
Coordinate teaching assistant efforts.
Support students through letters of recommendations and career guidance.
Specific duties include assisting with preparation and team-taught delivery of course content in the interactive learning classroom assisting in preparing and teaching laboratory sessions grading holding weekly office hours coordinating administrative efforts across multi-section courses assisting in ordering laboratory supplies supervising undergraduate teaching assistants facilitating department-wide data collection efforts that coincide with course delivery duties and other related duties as assigned.
Ph.D. required in Biomedical Engineering or related field (must be completed prior to Fall 2025 start date in late August)
Ability to teach 5-6 of our 3-credit courses per academic year
Teaching experience at the post-secondary level
Demonstrated commitment to diversity equity and inclusion and experience working with diverse individuals and groups
Experience related to the departments needs in support of our teaching and research missions
Strong commitment to undergraduate biomedical engineering education and to developing innovative high-quality curricular materials and instructional initiatives
Familiarity and sufficient background to teach topics that will cover 85% of our department curriculum
Experience teaching large lecture courses
Experience with online teaching software (e.g. Canvas Proctorio Gradescope)
Experience with hybrid teaching modes and technology
Experience supervising Teaching Assistants
