About The Position
We are seeking a candidate to work in the AQUEST Research Group who will work in both the laboratory and field. The technical Officer will undertake regular fieldwork for AQUEST research projects. This fieldwork will involve collecting environmental samples such as water sediment and macroinvertebrates from aquatic environments. In the laboratory work will include processing environmental samples and identification of aquatic macroinvertebrates.
The Technical Officer will report directly to the Technical Coordinator and will be tasked with delivering technical services and advice to support the AQUEST laboratories and workspaces. This role includes maintaining and demonstrating the operation of laboratory equipment and instruments as well as providing technical assistance to both staff and students.
In collaboration with the Technical Coordinator the incumbent will ensure the timely upkeep of laboratories and workshops. Additionally they will support the implementation of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) standards ensuring a client-focused and professional level of service.
Please note that having a valid drivers license is highly advantageous and overnight travel to regional Victoria will be for field work.
To be successful in this position youll have:
1. Demonstrated knowledge/experience conducting fieldwork in an environmental science settingincluding but not limited to conducting fieldwork for water quality and sediment quality programscollecting and processing of freshwater macroinvertebrate samples and work in the laboratories andfield to assist with conducting ecotoxicological tests.
2. Demonstrated experience operating and maintaining laboratory-based instruments/ equipmentrelevant to environmental engineering or environmental science including but not limited to compoundmicroscopes dissecting microscopes and water quality meters and generating appropriate operatingdocumentation.
3. Proven track record of building strong relationships with a range of stakeholders includingunderstanding and embracing a client focused framework.
4. Demonstrated understanding of current OH&S legislation with knowledge of other field or industryregulations or standards related to the field within the scope of the service area.
5. Effective communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams and with a diverse range of people from various backgrounds.
