Job Description

Position Description



Under general supervision the Assistant County Attorney will handle a wide range of legal responsibilities including drafting and reviewing legal documents managing records and maintaining accurate case files. Individuals in this role will be responsible for managing a large caseload ensuring that deadlines are met while maintaining high-quality standards.


The Assistant County Attorney is expected to be self-motivated have strong attention to detail as well as the ability to communicate effectively with judges court staff opposing counsel managing counsel fellow attorneys support staff county agencies elected officials and the public regarding litigation matters.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conducts administrative hearings three (3) to four (4) times per week in-person and virtually.

  • Manages litigation for several hundred active cases including pleadings evidence preparation filing service discovery mediation motion practice trial and lien abstraction.

  • Manages collection projects including periodic mailing efforts and conducts collections through bankruptcy proceedings estate filings and post-judgment enforcement actions such as writs and payoffs.

  • Manages pre-litigation collections through detailed payment plan agreements and ongoing monitoring for defaults.

  • Meets with toll road users to settle lawsuits and provides clear explanations regarding outstanding balances.

  • Prepares periodic reports detailing collection metrics and enters case information including defendant PII into databases and spreadsheets to track and manage several hundred active cases and mailings.

  • Performs administrative tasks including continuous evaluation and enhancement of Standard Operating Procedures and quality review of work and documents produced by support staff.

General Information

Located in downtown Houston the Harris County Attorneys Office represents Harris County government the Harris County Flood Control District the Harris County Toll Road Authority and the Greater Harris County 9-1-1 Emergency Network in all civil matters including lawsuits. The office also provides legal advice to county officials and employees.
