What Youll Do

As the Hazardous Materials Classifier you will research analyze and interpret engineering weapon component drawings for classification of hazardous materials. Requests authorizations for transportation in commerce of hazardous and energetic materials based on their hazard class. Coordinate with design agencies and support groups to gather information for hazardous materials associated with components. Determines adequacy of packaging of hazardous and energetic materials based on test data from prescribed tests includes providing operations with proper packaging marking and labeling. Creates and submits detailed documentation for material characterization in accordance with 49 CFR Department of Transportation regulations United Nations Modal regulations and Department of Defense regulations to the NNSA Explosive Hazards Classifier.
Responsibilities:
Lead and support process improvements for classifying and shipping weapon components subcomponents and other hazardous materials.
Conducts activities in a safe and healthy manner and works in accordance with the established environment safety and health requirements to ensure the protection of employees the public and the environment.
May recommend prepare and maintain systems policies and controls pertaining to the assigned area of responsibility.
May assist in the preparation of manuals internal operating procedures and standards for publication covering the administration of area of responsibility.
May utilize best-practice and innovative processes to define coordinate and implement to ensure cost-effective operations throughout the division.
Initiates and submits reports studies proposals safety improvement projects and makes recommendations for consideration by management and/or DOE representatives.
May participate with Process Engineering for appropriate routing of dismantlement components.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelors degree: Minimum 9 years of relevant experience.
  • Masters degree: Minimum 7 years of relevant experience.
  • PhD: Minimum 3 years of relevant experience.
  • OR Applicants with a high school diploma or equivalent may be considered on an exceptional basis with 17or more years of relevant experience

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of DOT regulations
  • Knowledge of hazardous materials
  • Knowledge of IATA
  • Knowledge of Plant structure
  • Written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to multitask
  • Ability to communicate technical information at a simpler level and explain the relation to another area and/orposition
  • Working knowledge of DOE and DOT federal regulations (49CFR parts 100 180 parts 300 399) State andlocal regulations
  • Working knowledge of the IATA dangerous goods regulations
  • Knowledge of the applicable regulations
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office

Preferred Job Requirements

  • Bachelors degree in an Engineering discipline (chemical electrical mechanical petroleum or nuclear) is
  • preferred or at least 4 years of related hazardous materials shipping experience is required.
  • DOT IATA and DOE advance certifications
  • Knowledge of weapon components their associated hazards and classification issues is preferred in order to
  • support shipping requirements
  • Working level knowledge and experience in Microsoft Excel Word PowerPoint and IPRO preferred
  • Ability to read and interpret Design Agency Drawings specifications technical papers reports and other
  • documentation as required for understanding components; ability to interact with organizations across the
  • Nuclear Weapons Complex; ability to present information

Requires a Q clearance; however all qualified candidates will be considered regardless of their current clearance status. The ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q clearance is required.

Position may require entry into Materials Access Areas (MAA) and participation in the Human Reliability Program (HRP). If HRP is required candidate must complete a counterintelligence-scope polygraph pursuant to 10CFR 709. Medical requirements may apply.
