Job Description

Job Title: Assistant Accountant

Reporting to: Manager Controllership

Position Type: Permanent

Job Purpose:

The Assistant Accountant role is positioned in the newly created Controllership Function reporting to the Controllership Manager. The Controllership Function acts as the custodian of the General Ledger and is responsible for ensuring the completeness and accuracy of all ledger balances. This role will strengthen the Finance teams ability to meet internal and external stakeholder needs and will also ensure an appropriate controls framework is in place across these processes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Establishing and Embedding a Strong Controllership Function
    • Learn and understand new initiatives which drive new ways of working leverage Financial technology to find new and innovative ways to optimise BAU Financial Controls processes;
    • Ensure key Income Statement and Balance Sheet Accounts and Source system reconciliations are completed and supported by strong auditable evidence; and
    • Ensure relevant process documents and process flows are update on a timely manner and incorporate changes and enhancements to procedures.
  • Custodianship of the Ledger
    • Adhere to the TM HCC Month end close process in accordance with the timelines provided by head office;
    • Preparation and posting of any new or recurring manual journal entries into the general ledger with a view to resolving any issues in future periods and ultimately reducing the volume of journals needed;
    • Adopt and embrace best practices for finance processes and develop standard reconciliation processes across all of Finance; and
    • Running of daily Trial Balances and Exception reporting from the General Ledger.
  • Quality Assurance (QA) and Review
    • Understand and support the Controllership team with Quality Assurance in alignment with Framework established and resolve any issues identified in the QA process; and
    • Highlight and raise any data anomalies and reconciliation issues including visibility of manual adjustment logs change ticket logs initiatives and projects. Assist in the resolution and testing of fixes.
  • Communication & Stakeholder Management
    • Provide value added support to the Controllership team in complying with reporting accounting control procedures and regulatory requirements;
    • Build strong relationships with stakeholders within and outside Finance across multiple locations enabling the department to deliver high quality effective support to the rest of the Business; and
    • Work collaboratively with the rest of the Finance to deliver on strategic objectives.
  • Transformation & Projects
    • Assist the Controllership team and Finance Change team with monthly User Acceptance Testing of any Change Requests which impact the financials; and
    • Support International Finance in achieving strategic objectives by engaging into projects and initiatives and ensuring outcomes are achieved.

Skills and Experience Specification:

Essential:

  • GCSE Grade 6 or above in Maths and English (or equivalent)
  • 3x A Levels (or equivalent)
  • Keen interest in Finance/accounting and the Insurance industry
  • IT literate with Experience of Microsoft Office applications in particular Excel
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Highly numerate with excellent attention to detail and accuracy
  • Strong people and communication skills ability to engage with individuals and to build strong working relationships

Desirable:

  • Previous experience in Accounting or Finance related roles
  • Previous experience in the Insurance industry
