Position Summary
Why Its a Great Opportunity:In this role with Pierce County you and your team will respond to and investigate citizen complaints and code violations of the Property Maintenance Public Nuisance and Land Use Codes. You and your teams efforts will play an integral role in enforcing and/or referring violations to appropriate agencies for compliance with County codes and ordinances. These County codes and ordinances pertain to land use zoning signs shorelines home occupations related land use documents wetlands illegal dumping nuisance vehicles and grading. You will lead a dedicated team of Code Enforcement Officers to enact all enforcement tools such as abatements boarding infractions civil penalties certificate of non-compliance and criminal charges. To ensure accountability you will need to write staff reports and testify at hearings. Core Daily Responsibilities:
- Provide leadership and guidance to Code Enforcement Officers and support staff.
- Assign work to a specific work unit and ensure tasks are completed correctly and timely.
- Approve leave requests and work schedules.
- Provide input on performance evaluations.
- Perform the essential functions of the Code Enforcement Officer classification.
- Coordinate the specific application of the Priority Ordinance Property Maintenance Code and the Chronic Nuisance Ordinance. Coordinate with law enforcement agencies health department fire marshal and other agencies and organizations involved.
- Carry a limited Sheriffs commission which allows incumbents to issue citations and view information from the Criminal Justice Information System.
- Issue warrants; oversee the abatement of property; posting of notices; and boarding up property.
- Complete field inspections throughout the County investigating complaints of violations of zoning public nuisance regulations and the Shoreline Management Act; interview property owners tenants and complainants to determine the nature of the violation recommend measures for correcting the violations.
- Prepare case documentation; research records and legal descriptions; confirm facts and establish written and pictorial evidence to confirm alleged violations. Prepare work reports on inspections conducted and recommend actions to correct violations.
- Present reports and evidence at Hearing Examiner Appeal hearings and court trials.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- A resume and cover letter are required for this position.
- Additional education and/or related experience which clearly indicates the ability to perform the essential functions of the position may substitute on a year for year basis for the recruiting requirements.
- Bachelors degree in Planning Public/Business Administration or related field AND
- Two years of experience performing Code Enforcement Officer functions or closely related work in planning zoning enforcement or related field.
- Possession of or the ability to obtain a valid Washington State Drivers license.
Preferred Qualifications:
- One year of lead or supervisory experience highly desired. Additional education and/or related experience which clearly indicates the ability to perform the essential functions of the position may substitute on a year for year basis for the recruiting requirements.
