Position Summary

Reporting to the Director of Prospect Development the Senior Prospect Development Analyst Principal Gifts provides best-in-class prospect research portfolio management and related prospect development services to the Senior Vice Chancellor for Advancement and other members of the Principal Gifts team. This position will primarily focus on principal gift-level ($5M) prospect identification research and reporting and will monitor and offer strategic consultative support for the development of the principal gift pipeline. Additionally this position will support the Senior Vice Chancellor in preparing for quarterly Board of Trustees meetings specifically the Nominations & Governance Committee through research profile creation and the proactive identification of potential board candidates.

Essential Functions

Prospect Research

  • Serve as the primary prospect research liaison to the Senior Vice Chancellor of Advancement and Associate Vice Chancellor for Development.
  • Provide prospect research to development officers who primarily work with leadership-level ($1M) and principal-level ($5M) prospects.
  • Identify new prospects and assess capacity/capability of making contributions at the leadership ($1M) and principal gift level ($5M).
  • Produce clear concise profiles on key prospects as requested by the Senior Vice Chancellor and other University leadership; collaborate with leadership team members to gain insight into what information is most helpful to each individual. Gain insight into preferences regarding format to produce clear concise profiles on key prospects as requested.
  • Generate top prospect lists for Chancellor and Senior Vice Chancellor travel as well as regional VIP events related to DUs comprehensive campaign.
  • Research and populate CRM Database (PioSphere) with current information on prospect and donor careers financial assets interests relationships affiliations and potential for philanthropic support.
  • Analyze individual wealth indicators including salary stock real estate and other assets to determine overall financial capacity and solicitation potential. This involves interpreting liquidity events and their relevance to solicitation strategies and timing as well as providing internal wealth ratings.
  • Monitor daily media alerts on top prospects and share information relevant to prospect strategies with Principal Gift team members.
  • Establish a deep understanding of DUs Campaign Top 200 prospects and ensure that research and information in all systems is kept current and available. Read contact reports related to DUs top donors.

Portfolio Management

  • Provide strategic consultative partnership to the Senior Vice Chancellor and the Principal Gift team that includes prospect strategies ideas reports and analysis related to principal prospects and donors.
  • Facilitate regular portfolio consultation meetings to review the Senior Vice Chancellors and broader principal gifts portfolios to achieve a high level of portfolio optimization while providing strategic input to advance prospect strategies increasing fundraising outcomes.
  • Regularly monitor the principal gifts prospect pool and assist the Director of Prospect Development with the management of the University prospect pool as needed.
  • Contribute to recurring pipeline meetings to review the principal gift pipeline and participate in campaign strategy sessions.
  • Update the CRM Database (PioSphere) with current information on prospect and donor assignments as well as proposal statuses.
  • Provide strategic recommendations regarding prioritization of prospects and prepare related analyses in advance of portfolio consultation meetings.

Relationship Building

  • Provide training to development officers in designated units as needed.
  • In partnership with the Senior Vice Chancellor and Chief of Staff research draft and maintain constituent profiles in support of the Board of Trustees Nominations & Governance Committee. Using parameters defined by the Board and in collaboration with Advancement leadership proactively identifying prospective candidates for Committee Consideration.
  • Participate in quarterly Nominations & Governance Committee meetings and additional ad hoc committee meetings as necessary to ensure accurate information is captured regarding next steps for potential board candidates maintaining high levels of confidentiality around prospective candidates.

Leadership

  • Work with the Director of Prospect Development to set strategic goals for the Prospect Development team including the development of new prospect research and prospect management policies and procedures report development etc.
  • Serve as a resource for other members of the Prospect Development team in providing guidance and advice on the practical application of prospect research and portfolio management concepts and best practices; provide subject matter expertise for one or more advanced prospect research topics.
  • Responsibilities may include supervision of student workers.

Partnerships & University Citizenship

  • Serve as an active and collaborative partner to all central and unit-based advancement functions to foster strategic effective and collaborative fundraising practices.
  • Model One DU leadership.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Proven research and analytical techniques emphasizing the ability to gather evaluate and synthesize data and information from various sources and present information clearly and cohesively.
  • Knowledge of current trends in philanthropy and higher education as well as advanced analytical and research skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills. Ability to present information in formal and informal settings and impart understanding of complex ideas to others.
  • Displays and demonstrates overall knowledge of prospect development including prospect identification research and management as well as data analysis querying and reporting.
  • Proven ability to deal with confidential matters with tact and sensitivity.
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to strategic discussions particularly with frontline fundraisers and Advancement leadership connecting the science of research with the art of relationship building.
  • Proven ability to prioritize and work independently responsibly and meet deadlines.
  • Expertise in industry-standard sources of data; familiarity with databases such as LexisNexis for Development Professionals (LNDP) ResearchPoint iWave Foundation Directory Rel-Sci desired.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree or equivalent combination of education and work experience (Veterans with equivalent combination of military certification/education and experience may substitute for the degree qualification).
  • 3 years in research tracking or data analysis with success in understanding internal and external clients needs and ability to translate needs into viable resources for clientele.
  • Management experience to include projects or personnel.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office products including Excel PowerPoint and Word

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters Degree in a related field including history library sciences or other humanities or social science fields.
  • Experience working in higher education political or similarly complex non-profit environment.
  • Active participation with Association of Professional Researchers for Advancement (APRA) Association for Advancement Services Professionals (AASP) Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) or other related professional organizations.

Working Environment

  • Standard open office environment.
  • Noise level is quiet to moderate.
  • Eligible for hybrid or remote work.

Physical Activities

  • Ability to work in front of a computer for an extended period.
  • Occasionally required to move about the office/campus

Work Schedule
Monday - Friday 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.; some nights and weekends as required. In accordance with the Universitys flexible work policy this position is eligible to be considered for partial remote work. Further details regarding this plan will be determined with the hiring manager and are dependent on the division and team specific needs.

Salary Grade Number:
The salary grade for the position is 10.

Salary Range:
The salary range for this position is $65000 - $72000.

The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate departmental budget availability internal salary equity considerations and available market information but not based on a candidates sex or any other protected status.
